You know, I just noticed something recently on this board, and it came as quite a shock
Are there any original viewers left around here?
I always assumed that the Survivor audience had pretty much been consistent throughout the years. I know the ratings were huge through Australia, then tapered off, but for the most part it seemed like the numbers had pretty much been the same since 2002. At least, thats the way it always seemed to me. It always felt like the Survivor diehards were the only one who frequented these boards. I figured it was just the same people posting here, over and over, since I didnt think Survivor ever picked up any new viewers.
But over the past few months, Ive noticed a lot of people saying things like I never saw the first few seasons. And by first few seasons, they arent just talking about Borneo and Australia. Ive noticed a lot of people around here who didnt start watching until Guatemala. Or Exile Island!
Well to me this came as quite a shock. Like I said, I always assumed that Survivors audience was made up people who have been watching since the very first episode (like me). It never even crossed my mind that the show might actually be picking up new viewers in its 13th season. Because what that means is that for every new fan that comes in, another old-school fan stops watching the show. Since the numbers have more or less been consistent throughout the years, that means that the attrition rate is around the same as the new viewership rate. And that means that at least half the fans on this board probably never saw the first few seasons when they originally came out.
Is this true? Are most of the original Survivor viewers really gone?
And are there that many new fans who just started watching the show in the last few seasons?
P.S. What really tipped me off to this phenomenon are a few comments Ive received lately about my All-Star Stories. A lot of old-school viewers will remember my stories (that I wrote between 2002-2004) as being fairly well publicized. But Ive had a slew of emails lately from new readers who just stumbled across my stories, but had no idea who any of the characters were. Im used to this from readers of All-Star Greece (Who was Debb? I dont know her.) But what surprised me is how many people say that nowadays about All-Star Alaska. (Who was Tammy? She sounds cool.) Are there really that many Survivor fans who have no idea who Tammy Leitner was? Or Paschal English?
