I think the reason liberals seem to hate anyone who disagrees with them is due to their overwhelming arrogance in believing that their solution is the only one that can possibly be right. Remember the slogan from the 60s "if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem"? What they really meant was "if you don't think my solution is the only one that could possibly work then you aren't worth listening to".
Why is it that the government rarely institutes any program with a pilot first to see if it actually works? Why is it that when programs that don't work are instituted the blame for them not working is always that they're underfunded? In the business world if a program proves to be ineffective it is killed and the funding is used for something else. In the fantasy land that is the government, if a program is ineffective then it's expanded and given more funds. It then develops a constituancy that has it's entire existance wrapped up in lobbying to continue the program and increase it's funding. No matter how outdated or useless the program may be. Here are some examples of existing federal programs: The Rural Electrification Administration was created in 1935 to help local utility companies bring electricity to rural areas. In 1949, REA's mission was expanded, with the assistance of Congress, to provide loans to rural telephone companies. REA continues today as part of the new Rural Utilities Service created by the Clinton Administration and the 103rd Congress. The new agency will give grants and loans to improve rural water and sewer service as well. The Export-Import Bank was created in 1934 to finance exports to Russia. Today, the bank backs some $18 billion per year in cheap credit to major corporations such as Boeing, McDonnell-Douglas, and General Electric. In the 60 years since its creation, the Export-Import Bank has lost $8 billion on its operations -- practically all of it in the last 15 years. The National Fertilizer Development Center, built as a munitions factory during World War I, was converted into a fertilizer plant and given to the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in the early 1930s. Fearing Congress would close it down, this obsolete program then reinvented itself and changed its name to the TVA Environmental Research Center as a way to chase federal research dollars. The 104th Congress, however, finally began taking steps to close this unnecessary program. Want - Take - Have!

Bob, I enjoy your political discussion. But I am not a liberal. I detest hypocrites of all political pursuasions.
I happen to live in California. I do not embrace George W's desire to make all illegal Mexican aliens legal, as any card carrying liberal presumably would. Why not all the illegal Asians and Irish as well? Why just Mexican? What does Vicente Fox have on Bush? Why is Vicente Fox the only leader that Bush has bent over backward to cozy up to? I think everybody should read Bugolosi's (I know I spelled this wrong) book about what really happend in Florida and the misconduct of the Supreme Court in the last election. No I haven't gotten over it. The five justices should be impeached. I still remember the story breaking about his drunk-driving arrest just before the election and his lame answers - the press is wrong for bringing it up, I'm not wrong for not disclosing it. I listen to conservative talk radio from time to time to hear all points of view. True conservatives are dissolusioned about the man. He will be a one term president if he makes it that far. Enjoying the debate. When all about you are losing their heads, insist upon a swordsman from France for your own.

Anne (if that IS your real name):
The judges who REALLY should be impeached are the Florida supreme court judges who issued a ruling that had no legal basis. I admit that the US Supreme Court ruling was a bit shaky as well, but when state court judges act like rogues in a matter of national importance something has to be done. I cannot BELIEVE that anyone on this planet has not "gotten over" the Florida thing. How much has Bush's "victory" really impacted your life (other than making you $300 richer)? |

No check yet. Otherwise, in no particular order:
1) John Ashcroft 2) Promised veto of stem cell research 3) Promised overturn of Roe v. Wade 4) Reform of anti-discrimination laws against gays, women I'm sure there's more, but those come to mind right away. And everyone uses their real first names here? Sorry. I think we're in partial agreement on the immigration issue. Mexicans should not be given special treatment. All illegals who have been paying taxes for 3 or more years should be given green cards and have the opportunity to apply for citizenship after the appropriate time. I don't care where they've come from, if they've been contributing their hard earned wages into the local/state/federal coffers then they should be legal.
Why is Bush singling Mexicans out? If you can't figure that out then you have to be either stupid or incredibly naive. The hispanic minority in this country is the fastest growing minority, and their voting loyalties have not been as firmly assigned as black loyalties are. "W" would love to wrap them up for the GOP the same way the black vote is wrapped up for the Dems, but I'm sure he'd be very happy if he could just split their vote 50-50. Want - Take - Have!

The fastest growing minority according to the last census is the Asian population. And I work in the media for in-language radio, so I know of which I speak.

Hate Dubya all you want, but if you're not a liberal, I'm surprised that you selected those points on which to despise Dubya.
") John Ashcroft" I can see if you're a liberal, why you wouldn't like Ashcroft, but if you're not liberal, then why the hate towards JA? His decision to not promote that African American judge was a judgement call and most would say a reasonable one considering what the judge did for that man who was charged for brutally killing several people (murders which many people witnessed first hand). ") Promised veto of stem cell research" The debate's NOT about vetoing stem cell research!!!!! Liberals (and I'm not calling you one) do this ALL OF THE TIME. They twist the facts. The debate is whether the GOVERNMENT (i.e. TAX PAYERS) should fund EMBRYONIC (unborn baby) stem cell research. It is legal for corporations to fund any kind of stem cell research that they want to. I've heard that much more promising results have been linked to non-Embryonic stem cell research (using stem cells from UMBILICAL CORDS & by other means which don't destroy life). That's what Dubya stands for...preventing unborn babies in the womb from being killed by abortion or unborn babies in the lab from being killed by medical scientists. ") Reform of anti-discrimination laws against gays, women" I love gay people (not in a homosexual way The answer is enforcing the laws that we already have for hurting people REGARDLESS of their gender, orientation, race... Would you feel any better if your straight brother were killed for $20 on the street, instead of your gay brother being killed for his orientation? I hope not. I would hope you'd want the killer to be punished just the same (which I think should be Life in Prison No Parole, but that's another subject.... |

Soft Colby Cheese,
I appreciate your comments and respect your viewpoints. The one point of mine that you didn't address is Roe v. Wade. Are you pro-life or anti-choice (the term depends on who is calling you names - I really am not a liberal. I don't believe in lowering standards to promote affirmative action, as the fire and police departments have done. Affirmative Action should be about outreach, not lower performance levels. And though I am pro-choice (or anti-life), as a Roman Catholic I know what my choice would be. I think we can all get along. And FYI - if the candidate happend to be a Jeffords or McCain I probably would have voted GOP. For the record I'm registered as an Independent. Roe v. Wade is not really overturnable. We needed someone like Bush to counterbalance 8 years of Clinton egomania. Bush will only last 4 years anyway.

Anne,
On Roe v Wade, I'm a libertarian and as everyone knows, libertarians are all about personal choice and accepting the consequences of those choices yourself rather than running to the government or a lawyer when you fuck up. As such, I believe that women should have the choice to choose but I think Roe v Wade was a bad decision. This is judical activism at it's worst, it is unelected officals dictating to the states that they can not make their own laws concerning this matter. I believe that any state that would make abortion illegal is living in a total fantasyland and that in most states the legislators responsible would quickly be kicked out of office. I'd even do what I could to help get rid of them but the supreme court should not be finding this "right" within the fourth amendment. Try reading the tenth amendment and tell me where their heads were at when they came up with this "right". btw: Being a good libertatian I send money to the local women's clinic to help low income women who otherwise couldn't afford an abortion to have one, but there's no way I want my tax dollars being used for that. Edited to add.... Bob is my real name, I have no problem letting people know that. Want - Take - Have!

Actual Dubya quotes:
"I think we all agree the past is over." "This is still a dangerous world. Its a world of madmen and uncertainty and potential mental losses." "Rarely is the question asked, "is our children learning?"" "Will the highways of the internet become more few?" "How many hands have I shaked?" "Families is where our nation finds hope, where our wings take dream." I think that 'bout says it all. Thank you Mrs. Loobner!
