Whether you agree or disagree with Dubya's policies, the tax refund was an excellent performance for a politician. As much as I like to make fun of him, and still will, getting that check hits home. When he was campaigning, he promised tax relief. Only six months in office and I have a refund check.
Compare that to the number one priority of his predecessor ... making sure it was safe for gays in the military. Don't get me wrong, I understand how that was also a real pocket book issue that affected tens of millions of Americans ... huh? And in the end, what did he get? A no-ask, no-tell policy or basically a draw. I'll take my check thank you ... and the continued tax relief to come. Of course folks who want to bash Bush, just for the sake of bashing him (imagine that happening on a message board, how odd), will do what they can to make it seem like it's no big deal. Some get pissy about the amount saying $300, $500 or $600 means nothing to them and that it won't affect consumer spending. Bullshit. Say that when you cash your check. In fact, don't cash it. Make your statement by marking 'return to sender' on the envelope since it means so little to you. Sure, I can do without it, but ultimately it was MY MONEY to start with and I'd rather get a chance to spend it myself than let it get spent on coffee filters for the Department of Education or some other nonsense. And YES, I plan on spending it. Then there's the folks who aren't even required to file tax reports who complain that they're not getting anything back. Listen, when you see half of your check disappear every week and still have to write a $5,000+ check at the end of the year, then you'll know what it means to earn that refund. As far as it being an "advance on the tax money you'd normally get back next winter", that's not entirely true. With Dubya's tax plan I would get it, but without his plan, I wouldn't be. Since this is his first year in office, that could hardly be called normal. Bottom line is it's a rebate of taxes that I ALREADY paid, and money that is rightfully mine. Kudos, Dubya. Now bring on more Adventures With The Bush Twins. JBMoney

The money has more to do with the slow down in our economy than it does with anything else.
The last time a Bush was in office and the economy slowed down, what did we do? We turned to a Clinton. We all know Americans love sequels. (I think there is a thread about it, or at least I remember reading a discussion) With Hilary poised to be the first serious female candidate for the presidencey, Bush does not want us to remember a slow economy in his first days of office come voting time. diversity |

Stupidest. Political. Thread. Ever.
As for lisa, I would give more credit to Greenspan than Clinton for the economy. Dolphins might be good sex partners, but they suck at football

MARK THIS DOWN ON YOUR CALENDAR!!
dicky, I agree. The Federal Reserve Chairman is much more in control of the economy than the President, but how many "normal" Americans know that?? Not many . . . Clinton's approval rating was so high because of the economy boom. Its important to a president to have a good economy, or there is no shot at re-election. diversity |

Quote: Not from Dubya's (and most Republicans') stand point. He's been advocating tax relief a lot longer than the economy turned down (which turned south during the Clinton Administration, btw). Quote: A little thing that no liberals like to point out is that the economy was going back up during the George Bush Presidency. And the economic upswing that America's been witnessing for the past couple of decades started in the Reagan years after he cut income taxes and implemented a capital gains tax cut. I agree Dcass. The Fed Chairman may have more power over the economy than anyone else. Edited to say: What the hell is going on with this thread??!! |
