Maybe he/she didn't watch this season -- with Taylor Hicks singing "Trouble" by Ray LaMontagne, and Chris Daughtry singing "I Dare You" by Shinedown. Not exactly two artists likely to show up on TRL anytime soon. Never mind all the very familiar jazz and R&B songs (see Donny Hathaway) that Elliott sang. I think the show's musical breadth improved by leaps and bounds this season. American Idol is pretty much a pop music competition. If you hate pop music, you are pretty much going to hate this show.
