The only true pop success generated by an AI winner is of course Kelly.

By pop you would tend to look at radio airplay. That is what the average person thinks about. Album success can be measured for anyone from any category. But pop success is mass appeal and songs people will hum to from cross-genres.

There are really 2 pop charts in terms of airplay. Now that Billboard has combined with Radio and Records (the true airplay monitor) it is MUCH easier to see and evalate.

There is the CHR (contemporary hit radio or Top 40) and the Hot AC (adult top 40). Kelly has been HUGE on both. Chris has been HUGE on both this year. Carrie is climbing on both with her latest country song. Other than that, nobody has been successful except for minor top 20 hits from Clay and Kim Locke.

Because she's so damn loveable, Melinda could have had a hit on both charts. However, Jordin would, with the right song, have very big hits on both when released. It's hard to say with Blake though.

Melinda would more likely hit the true AC chart as would Ruben, Taylor, and Carrie before her latest hit. Fantasia would only hit the R&B chart.

AI is about POP success. I think that Melinda was BY FAR the best we've seen in a LONG time, but her chartability on the genre AI wants to capitalize on may be limited.

True Carrie's album is ENORMOUSLY successful and Carrie may actually be the most well-rounded of winners.

Personally, I am a bit dismayed by Melinda's departure but somewhat numb to the whole thing at this point. I couldn't believe Sundance and Sloane were ousted pre-final 12, Gina left before Sanjagooble, and Sligh left so early.

The final 3, after all of this, almost seemed too good to be true and a Jordin/Melinda final 2 was almost fairytale in nature. Just goes to show you that there are no such things anymore.
