I do think that Americans have a tougher time living up to a playing their roles to the fullest of authenticity. I was always impressed with the Brits willingness to go to the yard with the plan while our folks always end up on meltdown.

When watching 1900 House/1940 House and the best ever Manor House, you saw the internal struggle but the willingness to get so into the demands of the project that allows us to really grasp the difficulty of the situation. Plus the Brits were willing to send in the "historian" as a touchstone and reference, sounding board as a means of helping them along.

Perhaps that is why Manor House really succeeded... Mr. Edgar was the most amazing man, he took his role seriously and the Chef Mr. Bean was literally willing to go to blows over how SERIOUSLY he took it. Remember when he go into the verbal duking with Master Stick-up-his Ass about not willing to really live as they were?

This group is having problems from the get go about what even this means. Momma Nudist is calling it "utopia". Let's try to remember something here, the concept of utopia for her and for the Puritans would not at all be the same. They came for religious freedom but ultimately as we have learned they became as opressive and restrictive as what they left behind.

These were not people known for great tolerance or acceptance. And in reality to actually follow thru with the laws would be well frankly impossible. That said the gay dude would never have the option of coming out, but knowing that in advance he would suffer no repurcussions it makes it moot.

The hollowness of the "punishments" are becoming laughable. They picked a particularly severe period in which to reproduce and perhaps that is why its not as engaging. Perhaps pre Civil War... Southern Colonial House may have been more interesting and brought into the ideas about modern racism, class, war, etc that would inspire controversy, conflict, etc.

I will finish the series but I am sorry that the Colonists seem to not take it as seriously as their predecessors.

EW discovered that the Colonists were provided with a few little items that well... weren't exactly Colonial.

1. Toothpaste/Toothbrushes. They complained during their diary cams and begged sucessfully for them. The producers complied as they did not want to be paying for more expensive dental work later on.

2. Medical Emergency. Giacomo put a hatchet through his hand and was sent to a local ER for treatment.

3. Poo-poo issues. The problem with the constant diet of oats and peas gave them poo issues so they provided rice for them... something unavailable in 1628 Maine.

4. Bug Spray. They had an endless supply of good old bug spray as a means to avoid any cases of West Nile Virus and any other mosquito borne related illnesses.

5. Flashlights were also provided as a source of light to be used only for emergency. Said emergency included late night potty runs. (Well with all that fiber....)
