I admit it...I bawled at this one for the Paunis. Darn them for having the MoTab choir sing "Love at Home" a beautiful hymn.
My mother would sing it when us kids would start fighting or bickering. It always made us laugh. And I saw my sisters on TV! Weeee! And the fall colors were lovely. It is a beautiful town. Interesting tidbits, though. There is no Sears to be found in that area...save a small catalog shop and dealer with a few items like lawn moers and sewing machines. The closest Sears is an hour's drive south to Ogden. They did a LOT of filming in Salt Lake City for this...ironic, since it is 90 miles away from Logan. My sisters said that they not only got the mortgage totally paid off, the family has well over $75,000 in cash on top of that...and donations are still coming in now that the show has aired. |

They are filming in Raleigh, NC right now. It really is a non-stop 24 hours a day deal, they tore the house down yesterday and will be done by Wednesday.
Aparently the father was a tailor and is going blind with a wife and two small kids. The house is located in the Mordecai (pronounced Mor-da-kee) section of Raleigh and was about to fall down, which is weird because that section has some really incredible antebellum houses. Surprised the neighbors would put up with it falling apart. Side note - originally a different family was picked in Raleigh but then the Extreme Home Makerover people found out that someone in the family killed someone in a hit and run or drunk driving accident, can't remember which. |

Bump. This episode was sad. They had someone who had cancer along with his family, and at the end of the episode they said he died in November.

Yes, it was sad that he died , but i had the feeling that was going to happen. I'm glad the show created that large food-service grade preparation kitchen for his widow's catering business. At least she now has a chance to provide more income for her family. I hope ABC or the community chipped in to pay the taxes and utilities on that new house for a while, it must draw power big time !

Re: Home location | ||

They're doing a home in Honolulu today.
A mom in Kalihi who earned notice from producers of ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" with her founding of a nonprofit supporting education for Native Hawaiian families won a makeover for her family home, it was announced today. The senior producer of ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," revealed the identity of the family, headed by Theresa "Momi" Akana, at a news conference today. The Akana family lives at 3030 Kalihi St. Their home is scheduled to become the 100th build of the hit reality series, and will be featured on the TV show's two-hour season premiere in September. The family of six received the trademark "door knock" from TV host and pitch man Ty Pennington at 9:45 a.m. Family members are now headed to the Mainland for a family vacation. Brookfield Homes Hawai'i and hundreds of volunteers from local companies are set to begin construction late tomorrow night. Construction will last for seven days, with crews working around the clock to finish the house in 106 hours before the family returns June 13. Mayor Mufi Hannemann worked with producers to help expedite the building permit process, and the city waived certain fees. Eleven years ago Akana started the nonprofit organization Keiki O Ka Aina Family Learning Center to provide free educational support for Native Hawaiian families. At the time, the single mom and her three children were on welfare. Akana used her food stamps to buy snacks for the center, producers said. Major floods in October 2004 washed away most of the Akana house foundation, leaving only a few pillars for support. The family tried to make repairs, but financial constraints and the family's lack of building expertise hobbled their ability to make significant improvements. Akana feared that the rest of their house would soon collapse into the Kalihi Stream, so she appealed to ABC for help. The Akana family, in the running with four other local families, won according to the show's senior producer because they exemplified aloha spirit with their dedication in helping more than 9,000 families in the past decade. The family includes Momi Akana, her husband Ben, 14-year-old Keahi, 12-year-old Kuulei, 8-year-old Maka and their newest addition, two-month old Poli. the.honoluluadvertiser.co...23671.html |

Re: Season opener | ||
|
Here's a long article about the salary of the woman who was chosen for the Sept. 23 season opener. ABC says they don't choose people based on salary. Interesting that the newspaper investigated this though. But hey, she's doing it for the children!
"Theresa "Momi" Akana, who moved into a new home built by the "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" reality show, earned more than $100,000 in a year as the head of the nonprofit organization she founded, and her husband is in a position that usually pays more than $125,000 a year. (Bank VP) Last month, the staff of ABC-TV's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," developer Brookfield Homes Hawai'i and about 3,000 volunteers completed a 3,500-square-foot home for Theresa Akana and her family and a 4,500-square community center for her nonprofit organization. A June 6 news release, issued by the show and Brookfield Homes, said, "Momi and her three children attempted to make their own improvements to their home, they never had the money or the expertise to complete anything properly, so the house is a series of unfinished construction projects." "As a nonprofit, there is no money to fix the damage done to Momi's home or to fix the structures that now house Keiki O Ka 'Aina," according to a June 7 news release from the show. show's production team decided to build a new four-bedroom, plantation-style home and 4,500-square-foot community center on the same three-acre lot at 3135 Kalihi St., which Keiki O Ka 'Aina bought in December 2006 for $2.7 million. When asked why the nonprofit couldn't take out a loan to fix Akana's original home, Naone said resources at Keiki O Ka 'Aina are already stretched thin. Nearly all of the $2.2 million in annual government grants and public contributions that the organization receives goes into program services, she said." www.honoluluadvertiser.co...20351/1001 |

I loved the show tonight. I get all misty when I see people actually fall out with excitement. The son was a doll & a real hero for dragging that big momma of his out of the fire. Plus, I'm getting tired of all the peeps with diseases get everything. This was just a regular family down on their luck. Refreshing. Hallelujah. |
