I watched the show all the way through, mainly on PBS (I hate BBC America). The best seasons are the early seasons, when the focus was on the relationship between Rimmer and Lister, when Cat wasn't written as a complete moron. Best of all, when there was NO Kryten. Kryten was one of the most annoying characters in TV history and as time went on the entire show revolved around him. The later seasons of the show were too much about space adventures and slapstick, not enough about the characters. I actually was one of the few who liked the last 2 seasons of the show, because at least they got back to being about the characters (and Chris Kerchansky never annoyed me as much as Kryten, not even close).
Chris Barrie (Rimmer) is possibly the most underrated comedian in recent TV history. I don't even know if he's acting anymore, which sucks, because he had good looks, he had phenomenal comic ability, the total package. |

LOVE THIS SHOW!! Yay, Voo! We have the entire thing on VHS, and blooper reels - the whole 9 yards.
Trivia: "Rimmer" plays Lara Croft's butler in the Tomb Raider movies, and Craig Charles ("Lister") has done all kinds of TV, but is currently on Coronation Street as a regular. He's bought half of Streetcars. |

I loved this show. The first seasons were the best, then it got kind of stupid.
The cat made the show! |

I just bought all 8 seasons, that are out on DVD. We are going to have a Red Dwarf Marathon. I got hooked on RD, one day while channel surfing. Happened onto the "Sdrawkcab" (Backwards) episode, and we laughed our asses off. Loved it ever since. I agree Kryton is totally irritating, but he was meant to be.

Fave episodes:
Better Than Life is one of the great ones, when they get a virtual game that allows them to turn their thoughts into "reality." Poor Rimmer is such a tool that he wishes he were married and had a ton of kids. I also like the ep when Holly pretends to strike and puts up a different face (Q), who makes them all clean the ship. The Cat was great in the early going, but agreed - it did become silly in some of the mid-to-late episodes. We haven't watched our tapes in ages, but you guys are getting me in the mood! |

When are they going to do a series 9 or a movie to wrap up the story?

My husband loves this show. I have bought the first four seasons for him since PBS doesn't show them in order. Strange show, but entertaining.

you also have to get the Smegups videos - hysterical. All the outtakes.
Lister (Craig Charles) is now on Emmerdale - saw him when I was in Scotland. I believe he was also in jail for awhile for rape. He's been to our local PBS affiliate since then for pledge drives when they have Red Dwarf marathons. My favorite episode is Backwards. |

Loved this show for a long time now.
The earliest seasons were the best. Season 7 pretty much sucked because Rimmer was only in a few of the epidsodes. Season 8 was terrific. Glad to finally see some fans of this great show! |

I'm still hoping we'll get a movie or another series to complete the tale.

Hey, Red Dwarf just won some British magazine's sci-fi poll as the favorite/best (sf) tv show of all time.

From www.reddwarf.co.uk.
19 September, 2008 New specials? Proper information? After all the rumours? Oh smeg yes. reddwarf.co.uk has the facts. As announced by Robert Llewellyn for Grant Naylor Productions this week at the UKTV seasonal press launch, the project is a short series of brand new specials to celebrate the 21st birthday of Red Dwarf.
Red Dwarf repeats on Dave - including an anniversary weekend run - have picked up remarkable numbers since the channel was reborn on Freeview, and it's becoming clear to all concerned that the show is picking a new, third generation audience. With the usual involvement from Red Dwarf partners BBC Worldwide, you can also expect international broadcasts to follow (and, we'd imagine, a top-quality DVD release in the fullness of time). It's very new news to me - I really only fully heard the details yesterday, Robert told comedian/host Michael McIntyre. We're doing four new shows with the original cast. Two of them are going to be, like, proper episodes of Red Dwarf. One of them is so exciting I've been asked not to say anything about that because other people will steal the idea - and it is a great idea, quite challenging for us as performers. And the other one is a kind of behind-the-scenes-y... the truth. There's been so many rumours and gossip about Red Dwarf, about whether there's going to be a movie and whether we all get on, all those things... The downside for me, which is just dawning on me now, is I've got to do the 'rubber' thing again, which I haven't done for ten years. For the record, and direct from the makers, the details of the four shows right now - while wholly subject to change - are: Show One - The Making Of The Specials
The shows will broadcast sometime in 2009 and, if successful, could pave the way for further Red Dwarf TV projects. Thanks to movie and broadcaster wrangles, Grant Naylor haven't been in a position to produce new Red Dwarf since Series VIII went out to audiences of over eight million in 1999. This exciting development suggests a new and shiny future for everyone's favourite sci-fi comedy. To be kept in the loop as we cover the new production, register your email address with reddwarf.co.uk in the box at the bottom of the page. The Boys from the Dwarf are back! |

That is great news! I remember back in the day patiently waiting for PBS to air a marathon and then wouldn't move from my couch the whole time. I had a
friend in England who could get tapes made and would send them to us. I'm so excited. Oh hell now the theme song is stuck in my head again.
