I hope they don't cop out and make this a one-episode thing like Dwight's quitting was. Michael leaving has been a long time coming and needs to last until at least the rest of the season. Most of the British characters have had analogues, except for Neil, whose role has been divvied up between Josh, Ryan, and David. And now that Stringer Bell is here playing a no-nonsense antagonistic straight man, we're finally going to get the most important aspect of Neil's character...the guy who finally says enough is enough and takes action against Michael and the branch. If Michael didn't quit, Charles would have canned him before much longer. I mentioned a week or two ago that this had to be coming in order for the show to keep any sort of credulity, and here it is, not a moment too soon.

And of course, I worry for Jim. It would be sadly poetic if he were to ultimately destroy himself because he took a Dwight prank too far. I was begging him to get Charles one-on-one and explain himself seriously, and of course he did that but chose his words poorly and sunk himself further ("assistant to the regional manager").

Charles is a great addition. Though Office fans are logically fans of great television and therefore all love Idris from The Wire, it seems we're being asked to hate him here because Charles does not seem to have much of a sense of humor. He's there to be intimidating and hostile. Pretty much the exact opposite of Holly.

I might be anticipating next week's Office more than next week's Lost.

Those blurbs are sent out several weeks in advance, so it could just be worded that way so as not to give away what happened last night. But yes, Michael will probably still be in the office while they transition to whoever runs the branch next (based on what Charles saw, Stanley was the only one qualified who wasn't a freak).
