Friday Night Lights, the book, was excellent.
Friday Night Lights, the movie, was good. Varsity Blues was total shit. This show was good for a first episode. I'm from Texas and I thought it was a little cliched in parts, and there was something a little off about it, but I'll say this. When the QB was getting taken off on a stretcher, I felt like I got punched in the stomach, because for as many times as I've seen players carted off the field in real life, this was the first time I got even a small sense of what it might feel like to see that happen to someone I know. It actually felt kind of real to me. So emotionally, it was better than I expect from most shows. |

This first episode obviously paled in comparision to the film, but was light-years better than, ugh, VARSITY BLUES?
The show had a lot of filmic qualities to it (Peter Berg directed it) and while they didnt all work, at least it was often unexpected, especially considering anybody who watched the film basically already knew the story. I thought the scene at the car dealership was fantastic. |

I have to admit that the only reason I watched this was because I've loved Kyle Chandler since Homefront. Oddly enough, I thought these people were fucking crazy over their obsession with high school football until I realized that if you replace "football" with "hockey" you've got my city.

I couldn't get past the first commercial either.
If I wanted to watch a bunch of stupid people with pathetic lives, I'd watch America's Funniest Home Videos. Meh. I'm just in a bad mood. I'll finish it tomorrow. |

When I first saw the commercial with the jocks saying "Texas forever" I decided to give it a pass forever. The rednecks are going to have a hard time deciding between this show and O'Reilly.

I also thought the accents were terrible, but I'll be damned if I wasn't really into the episode by the end. I really think they captured what a Friday night high school football game is like for a small Texas town, and how football is life for many of the residents (e.g. all the people offering advice to the players at the pep rally).

I want to like it because Homefront is in my top 5 favorite shows of all time. (Kyle Chandler was a star of that).
PS. I'm not Canadian. Not that there's anything wrong with that. |

Watched this because A) I like football stuff. B) I adore Kyle Chandler and have since Homefront as well. C)Used to live in Dallas and got totally wrapped up in the whole high school football thing then. Plus I liked the movie. I thought the show was really good and I thought they really did a good job of making you care about the characters.

I liked it, but I was annoyed when it turned into the Mack Brown show about halfway through.
I also enjoyed picking out familiar places. The Round Rock water tower - and the Twister ice cream cone place in Pflugerville. The Westerly Chaps were totally a take off on the Westlake Chaps of Austin. I've got a season pass for it. |

Friday Night Lights book was great. The movie was a fair adaptation. I hated Varsity Blues. Come on - the backup QB is sitting on the sidelines reading Vonnegut. Bitch, please.
Loved Mack Brown's "you don't need a good QB to win a championship." Still waiting for the RB to blow out his knee. |

I decided to check this out because of the good reviews it got. It was OK...just seems like another soap opera drama to me, but it'll be a good addition to my TIVO so I can watch it when I'm bored. It's kinda the same way I feel about Studio 60.
Interesting note though, that whole Jason Street thing happened to my brother when he was quarterback in high school. It was a home game and me and my mom were there. Everything they showed last night is true. My brother got a hit that knocked his helmet off and knocked him out cold. Watching that scene on TV last night reminded me of it....and I had such a reaction. I started shaking and crying and just saying to my hubby over and over....that's exactly what it's like, that's exactly what it's like. The dead silence of the stadium, the ambulance coming on to the field, strapping him to the back board, my mom running down on the field crying...man that was so scary. I was like 10 years old. My mom took off in the ambulance and I went to the hospital with my brother's best friend mom. The good part is that my brother was OK...he had a concussion, but no spinal injuries. |

I was a bit disappointed. As with most pilots, they tried to cram too much into one episode. Too many characters to keep track of.
I like the look of the show though. It does feel like a movie. I'll probably tune in next week, but based on the reviews I was expecting more. |

Sounds like the viewing public didn't buy into the hype either.
Last night's premiere scored a disappointing 4.7/7 rating, finishing a distant third in the timeslot. On the plus side, this makes Heroes the highest-rated new show for NBC this year, all but guaranteeing that it will be renewed for a second season. |

Not surprised by the ratings, why would anyone think that this would be a hit? It didn't appeal to me at all or anyone I know. It looks like something that works as a movie, not a series and family type shows nowadays just don't do well anymore especially at 8 up against DWTS which is essentially a feel good family show that people are already hooked on.

Ouch. I didnt think it would do that badly. Come to think of it, have there been any successful shows about sports recently? The one from last season Clubhouse was a big flop.

With the baseball playoffs starting, and NFL season in full swing, I think sports fans are choosing to watch the actual sporting events, rather than a fictional show about sports.
