I've been debating on whether I should post here using my Dell laptop, my Compaq desktop or my BlackBerry. In the end, I decided my route was using the
Dell laptop to express my feelings that the product placement has no effect on me at all.

this whole issue has me torn.
as i awoke this morning and prepared my morning cappuccino in my capresso c3000, i remembered that not only did last night's ep (opps! excuse me, my pillsbury toaster strudel just popped out of my william sonoma dualit toaster...) anyway, i remembered that not only did last night's ep have the lurk-r deaded "product placement" but the bertolli oven bake commercials that ran also contained references to the bbt show! that's not product placement... that's "television show" placement... within a commercial?!?!?! what's next? dogs laying down with cats? lurk might be right. this is too much for me. i need to go spend some quality time in my sharper image human touch massage chair... |

as long as it doesnt' effect the storylines or comedic value of the show.Actually there was a part of the show last night that made me think 'wow, that was random'...when Sheldon knocked on Penny's door to ask her to take him to Pottery Barn to return his sheets. I wonder if it was because they had to say Pottery Barn just one more time. That said, I would prefer 'product placement' over deliberately generic. Remember when everyone on TV drank cans of 'cola'? |

and the running joke was about STAR WARS SHEETS and the fact that the STAR WARS SHEETS were too stimulating to sleep upon and sheldon's "homo
novus" need to return the STAR WARS SHEETS.
(i doubt you could even find STAR WARS SHEETS at a pottery barn.) in the end it all worked out. sheldon determined that if he turned off his night light then the sheets would not be so "overstimulating"... if you can't see all of the jokes above because you are stopped by the words "pottery barn", then there is no hope for you. you have no humor. you are the opposite of humor. you are the death of humor. and you should stop watching bbt immediately and seek professional help... |

i dont mind product placement when its blended into the show and not so obvious
and thats what i like about BBT..u dont really know for sure if its all paid product placement or not? unlike something like Ugly Betty with the Heathly Choice food spots, that I find to be more of a distraction from the story then blended into it |

One of the tenets of good writing is to use specifics. Saying "I'm going to the store and the library" is not nearly as funny as "I'm
going to Radio Shack and Pottery Barn."
It's called creating verisimilitude. There's a thin line between using specifics for comic effect and advertising products, perhaps. But replacing BBT's pop culture references with generic ones would only serve to kill much of the nerd humor that flavors this show and gives it such a unique character. So if the quote "product placement" unquote bothers you so terribly terribly much, stop watching. But if you don't even notice this fabled "product placing" because you're too busy laughing at what is without a doubt one of the most consistently well-written sitcoms on television right now, enjoy! Penny hitting Sheldon with the pillow was my favorite part, by the way. |

sales people there through as he analyses the differences between Star Wars vs Empire Strikes Back sheets? And whether or not it would be too stimulating to

While the nascent P'ha was developing his taste in television, he was disturbed by scenes in the GREAT All in the Family in which Archie Bunker would have
a beer and the can would simply read "BEER" on a white background.
I thought that practice was breaking the fourth wall by exposing Archie as a not-living, fictional character. Adding detail, so long as it fits, doesn't bug me a bit and in fact provides versimilitude. Them network suits need $$$ for their mistresses and meth, so who's to fault them for dropping in occasional references -- so long as they fit. Survivor used to the worst. Playing for bags of Doritos and something called the Pontiac Aztek? The motherfucking Travelocity gnomes that get sprinkled throughout TAR? That practice pisses me awf. But no. Name brand references such as last night's fit well, plus I bet they decreased the amount of breaks to commercials with nothing going on. Plus, didn't Ford sponsor a 24 opener simply by having all the vehicles used being Fords? No commercial breaks. I thought that was brilliant. Anyhow, the BBT placements strike me as a fine and reasonable balance. And they work. Anyhow, the funniest parts of Sheldon's driving simulation weren't so much him, but the reax of the ensemble when he crashed. Kelly Cuoco must've loved smacking Jim Parsons with the pillow more than any scene she's ever filmed. |

Oh...the theme song by the Barenaked Ladies is the best ever. Have you heard the long (well, longer) version? It's even better. Re: product placement, I'm sorry, but can you imagine how lame it would be if Sheldon wanted to return his "Star Battles" sheets to "the store"? We would still get the joke, but like P'ha said, it's much more distracting and doesn't translate as well when they create a generic name for it. I guarantee you that more people notice stuff like that than when the actual product/store is mentioned. Mentioning IHOP rolls off the brain; if they made it "The Pancake Hut" or something stupid like that the viewers is gonna ask themselves "Is that a real place?" |
