Re: Skit from Old Late Night Days

Given the recent events at OT, and considering how a post of mine was used in the early parts of that deadly flame war (how the hell was I involved????), my thoughts raced back to one of my favorite "New Gift Ideas" from the old Late Night days.
What say we add "Oiler99", "KingOfMasks" and, from what I read, "Johnny Mullet" (his was independent of the flame war to which I speak), to the group of "Banned for Life Action Figures" that included Pete Rose, Washington Redskins' Defensive Lineman Dexter Manley and, of course, the entire Oklahoma University football team.... |

Maybe I'm just strange. (allright, keep your mouths shut!) as for Dave and marriage, that's between Regina and Dave. she's been with him for all this time, something tells me she likes her life. Besides, rumor has it that they got married in Montana in the fall. That's why that visiting bear had cake to eat!! (the bear cracked me up) I can't wait for Dave to return with new shows. Still, even his reruns are better than most of what's on tv... |

I hate how at the beginning of Leno's show he comes down and the front rows come to him and shake his hand and touch him and stuff. Who does he think he is!? Jesus Christ!? Santa Claus!? |

Dave on Howard - 1/12/03
|
Dave was on Howard's radio show this morning to celebrate Howard's 50th Birthday. Missed it, but here's the recap from Mark's Friggin.com:
David Letterman Wishes Howard A Happy Birthday. 01/12/04. 7:20am Robin had to ask Stuttering John and Colin to leave the studio because they had another guest coming in. It was David Letterman, the real David Letterman who actually showed up to wish Howard a happy birthday. Howard said it wasn't ''Evil Dave'' today. Dave came in and said that since Howard was nice enough to come on his show a couple of weeks ago, he figured he owed it to him. He didn't bring Howard a gift or anything because when people do that on his show, it's a waste of time. Dave told Howard that this whole thing wasn't his idea. Howard said he knows Dave hates doing stuff like this and that makes him uncomfortable. Howard said he really had a good time doing Dave's show last time but it was in a strange way. Dave said they may be doing each other's shows because they just don't care anymore. Howard asked Dave if he was freaked out when he turned 50. Dave said that it's when you hit 55 and start coming up on 60 is when it starts to hit you. Dave also said that he can't believe he's still on TV at this age. Howard said that he really wants to leave radio at the end of his contract and asked Dave what he thought. Dave said that he might be saying that now but we'll have to see what he's saying in two years. Howard said there were times when he and Dave would talk to each other on the phone and this is the same stuff they'd talk about. They'd both get depressed. Howard and Robin asked Dave what he thinks about having a baby. He said it's actually kind of fun having his son. He said he didn't know how amusing the baby would be. Dave told Howard that he was already living with his girlfriend before the baby came around. Robin said that the baby's name is Harry Letterman but it's not real until Dave marries the woman. Dave said he was married at one point and he's in no rush to do that again. Howard talked to Dave about what he's doing about taking care of the baby and all of that. He said that he doesn't have anyone in the house helping out at this point. He said he hasn't had anyone in there yet but he can't say that he never will. Dave said that he's even changing diapers himself. Howard said he never did that stuff because he had to wake up to do the radio show. Dave said that sleep is not imperative for the type of show he does. Dave told Howard that he's just going to wait to get fired at this point in his career. He said he doesn't care. He also told Howard that he'll never have his girlfriend or baby on his TV show. That led to them talking about Kathie Lee Gifford and how she always put her kids on TV. Howard found out that Kathie Lee doesn't do his show that much anymore so she must be ''off the list'' for Dave's show. Howard said she did Jimmy Kimmel's show so she must be kind of desperate to get on TV. Howard told Dave that he was making him very uptight. He said he had a good time on Dave's show the last time he did it in November. He said that Dave gave him his first break and had him on his TV show when he was working at WNBC. Howard said that he feels affection for Dave because of what he did for him but it's very awkward. Howard said that he felt that when he did Dave's show in November. Fred started to play sad piano music in the background as Howard was telling Dave this stuff. Dave asked if Evil Dave was going to call in before he left. Howard said if he knew Dave was coming in he would have had Evil Dave come in as well. Howard had to wrap up the quick interview shortly after that. He thanked Dave for coming in and went to commercial break. |

Did anyone see the show last night?
Quote: It was pretty funny. Dave demanded a phone call apologizing and assuring him the person responsible has been fired. Let's see what happens. |

It was pretty funny. Dave said he wanted an apology from somebody important, not a stooge, and he wanted a fake assurance that the person that did it would be fired. He also said that he knew there was a CBS stooge in the control room, and that person should get right on it.
When he came back from commercial, he pointed to a blinking phone line on his desk and said he was told that it was Les Moonves, the president of CBS. Moonves assured Dave that not only was the employee fired, but the entire CBS website was taken down. (The website is still up, of course, and the People's Choice page now shows Dave instead of Leno.) |

I'm wonder if they'll have that as a "comedy clip" on the Dave website.
In the Wahoo they have a picture of the modified web site showing Dave. But to hear Dave do his Assclown Leno impression was priceless. Or, as Dave would say, it was worth the price of admission..... |

Dave is often best when he is behind the desk just being himself. He has a way of telling a story that has the right amount of disgust and humor, or when appropriate (after 9/11) he can be serious and thoughtful.
One of my favorite stories was his encounter w/a bear in his house in Montana. At first he thought someone was making him breakfast |

Re: Dave & the People's Choice Awards

I wish they wouldn't lump Oprah into the talkshow award or whatever the category is. Late night and Oprah style are different things. Dave is truly the people's choice to all of those with any taste. And I would think the voting is skewed towards Oprah because Dave and Jay would split the late night viewers. Also I think most Dave fans wouldn't be voting for any people's choice awards in the first place. That's probably not what they're into.
And I'm a little late to the discussion, but wasn't Dave's personal sacrifice to visit the troops just the best?!?!? That's one of the reasons why I have so much respect for Dave. I can't resist this little story. In my local newspaper there was a little blurb about Dave's trip to Iraq. There was also a little story about Jay Leno. Dave's headline read - Letterman visits troops in Baghdad. Jay's read - Leno eats 125-year-old fruitcake. In my mind that sums up the difference between Dave and Jay. Not that Jay's a bad guy. I'm sure he has done his share of nice things. I'm just not all that familiar with Jay's activities. I have read about his wife's interest and concern for the women of Afghanistan. You know, Tiger, I, too, wondered if Dave married little Harry's mom way back when that bear story came out. The cake and other stuff sounded like pretty compelling evidence that they were having a nice celebration. Maybe he'll share that piece of his personal life with all of us Dave fans soon. I suppose that's his business and he is certainly entitled to his privacy. I would never want to infringe on the man's privacy. Either way I just wish the best for him and his family. |

I have a theory on the Leno/Letterman preference. Someone in an earlier thread mentioned that "all my friends watch Letterman so I don't know how Leno wins in the ratings".
Actually my theory is that your preference is based on the type of person you are and you hang around with people who mesh with that the most. Therefore, Letterman people generally hang around together and Leno people hang around together. I think Letterman people prefer the edgier type of humor. Most posts here call it a more intellectual humor. That is probably correct in its description. With Letterman's show, you have to involve yourself, engage in it. Now Leno is more of the folksy type of person. He is the person someone invites into their living room or bedroom as they wind down their day, and basically want to enjoy the chat and not make too many demands of engaging personally into the interaction. I think more people are that type later at night. Therefore, more watch his show. Look around at your friends, the people you are closest to. I bet that they watch the same late night show you do. I also bet that you get along better with people who watch the same late night show you do, you understand them a bit better. When I have shared this theory with other people, they think about it and say, Yeah, I watch Letterman, and I get along better with Letterman people or Yeah, i watch Leno and I get along better with Leno folks. |
