OG, I like the way you think and agree with most of what you said. Well put.

I also gasped when that rat Duck put poor Chauncey on the street. Unfortunately, my first thought is that the poor dog will wander into the street and to his demise. Duck needs to get himself liquored up, go to the roof and jump.

My thoughts on the Betty/Don relationship and Don's extracurricular activities. I think the mind set back then (and still today with many men) is that once a woman becomes a wife and mother of their children, the husband sees her very differently. I'm certain Don & Betty had great sex when they met and were dating. She was a hot model in his eyes. Then they married and my guess is the sex changed fairly drastically. Don can't do certain things to his "wife" and soon to be mother of his children. Then Betty had his babies. This is probably when the sex came to almost a screeching halt. Don cannot defile and debase the mother of his children. Only very chaste sex and not too often in order to keep the mother of his children unsullied.

In this vein, Don's conquests outside the marriage grew. When he and Betty dated, I'm sure Don was pretty faithful (see Pete for an example. Pete went into his marriage in the beginning with an "I can't mess around anymore, I am a married man and I love my wife." So, Pete stayed faithful for, what, almost 2 years? Now Pete is on the prowl and starting down the road, like Don and many others before him.) Once Betty & Don married, I'm sure Don stayed faithful for a period and started messing around here and there. Betty popped out her first kid and Don had to turn his sexual desires elsewhere.

Don likes to tie women up, apparently, and play a little rough. He would NEVER think of doing that to the mother of his children. The mother of his children has sex only in bed and in the missionary position. Don has to fulfil his needs with lovers, because of the way people thought back then about sex. I feel for the women back then. Betty would probably give anything to have Don ravage her on a daily basis and give her the orgasms she so desparately needs. Poor gal.

In Don's mind, he doesn't see his lovers as doing something wrong. This is the way things were back then. I do think he has a problem with anyone "praising" him on it or praising him on anything, though. Which is why he was so upset at Bobbi.

Don's inner demons keep him from liking himself. He really isn't a bad guy, but he sees himself as a bad guy. As a child, he was a "bastard" child of the town prostitute. You know that was pounded into him 24/7 until he enlisted and left home. Don started out life thinking he was bad.

The unfortunate incident during the war, where he saw and opportunity to change his lot in life and took it. He was a hero, as he was the only one who volunteered to go into that dangerous situation. I'm guessing it was partly a suicide attempt, thinking he wouldn't survive. Then he was spared and "Don Draper" did not. He had already resigned himself to "dying" on that mission and when he did not physically die, he took Draper's identity and killed himself. Unfortunately for Don, his memories didn't die that day and torment him to this day.

So, as OG said earlier, Don is really a hero and he is a good person who tries to do the right thing. However, he can't escape his inner turmoil and all that was ingrained into him from his birth, no matter how hard he tried. Don still thinks of himself as a bastard child and is terrified that people will find out. No matter how many good things he does in life, Don will only focus on the bad.

Last comment. FINALLY, Peggy is dressing like a grownup. Thank you, Joan, for beating it into Peggy for the umpteenth time "Quit dressing like a little girl." Maybe I will now be able to start liking and rooting for Peggy. Until now, no one has gotten under my skin more than Peggy (except that dastardly Duck). I hope we are finally going to see Peggy infuse some Joan into her everyday life and start owning all these pathetic men around her.
