Best Line: Salvatore (The Closeted Gay[Basically, the only kind of gay in 1960]): So, we're supposed to believe that people are living one way and secretly thinking the opposite? That's ridiculous! Pleasing on so many levels... Of course, cigarette advertising today is just that: the rock climber with a smoke, the hang glider with a cigarette... Also loved the GYN scene and the strip club scene.

The irony is that in the following years, the same executives who ridiculed this idea became big on "sublilminal advertising" -- camouflaging skulls into the scotch glasses and cigarette cartons of their print ads to appeal to the consumers' unconscious death wish.

The premise of Mad Men didn't seem like something that would be interesting, nor done well. But, damn, I'm more than intrigued by how tight it's put together after stumbling on a repeat of the premiere. It all clicks. The pacing, characters, art direction, story. It's rare nowadays to watch TV and be transported into their world whole heartedly. Give me Mad Men over the likes of the truly vile abundance of reality crap anyday. Excellent quality drama.

"its just more happiness..." great storytelling, but like the sopranos its the fucking humor that get me. dan is outside his office talking about nixon and we see a flash as "the boys" are lighting matches in front of the spray deodorant. little sally draper is running around wearing a dry cleaning bag over her head and mom calls her out, worried only that the clothes that were in that bag are soiled. this shit is priceless...

I thought she might be sleeping her way to the top or something, but now I'm more inclined to think she's fallen for Pete, yawn. I really hope she's not in love with Pete has a grander scheme up her dress. Otherwise, I thought last night's episode was brilliant. Anyone think the wife has Parkinson's? Also I smell a lesbian subplot with the divorcee or at least some kind of Hourseque type friendship.

The one thing that is ANNOYING THE HELL OUT OF ME...is the constant, constant damn toking on cigarettes. I realize this was true to the style of film, "back then" where the series is set in. And part of the culture of that time, more so back then, than now. There's a slight retro avant-garde appeal to the series, which is appealing, I'll have to check out the earlier episodes to catch up on any history I missed.

I've only seen 2 different ones - the first one (I think) where Peggy goes to the smokin' gynecologist and then to bed with the skeevy guy - and the one where Don's wife goes to the scummy psychiatrist who then reveals all to Don. I recorded what I thought was going to be a new episode Wednesday but it was a repeat of the psychiatrist episode. Is that all or are is there a lot that I've missed? 2 Legit
