This wasn't even close, alas. PD's numbers were dreadful, and one week doesn't matter much when it just bounced a bit higher than that other dead
cat, Knight Rider.
Thanks to ABC for bringing back PD for a try at a 2nd season. Personally, I was wondering how much more they could squeeze out of the absolutely marvelous concept behind the show - a reconcilliation somehow between Chuck and aunts/mother, Ned meeting Dad... new characters maybe... The problem with this 'high concept' show was that as quirky as it was, and no matter how well-written and designed (my gosh! the look of the show... and the dresses the ladies wore!!!) it was, the concept itself was limited to possibilites without serious shark-jumping. If it could have squeezed out a full 2nd season and then a 3rd without a loss of quality it would have been remarkable. And feh to ABC for cancelling it. Couldn't they pull a Friday Night Lights and put it on Bravo or something? Its ratings would be fine on cable... sigh. |

While I don't think ABC is blameless in this situation (they probably should have brought it back after the strike, and leaving their Wednesday lineup
intact was pretty dumb), I do think they gave the show a pretty decent shake. Almost any other year, it would've been pulled after four airings due its
dismal numbers this year. It's numbers were pretty awful. It might not have gotten as many chances as Veronica Mars or Arrested Development, but frankly
neither show ever pulled in the ratings to justify the number of chances they got. I love this show, and I will miss it dearly, but I'm grateful that we
managed to get two seasons out of it.

They took a gamble greenlighting three VERY quirky shows -- Pushing Daisies, Dirty Sexy Money and Eli Stone. Dirty Sexy Money was hardly quirky. It had a great cast and premise, it just...sucked. It was never very dirty or sexy or...uhh money. Anyways |

JRobbed wrote:Here is why PD failed its so easy. Last Fall it was on Wed at 8:00 and Dancing with the Stars Results were also on Wed Night so i think that being on the same night as the highest fall rated show, and the most talked about new show its helped alot. Once DWTS finished Daisies failed, didnt the first season finale only rank it 6 million viewers also. Had they brought it back for the Spring it would have been up against Fox's American Idol Tues/Wed giant and the show would not have made it back for the fall. Had DWTS not shit its pants and ran away from American Idol Wed, the show would still be on Wed's and PD would still be bringing in a stable 8 million viewers, and likly have had stayed on the air. I think thats the problem. Certain channels revolve around certain shows. American Idol saves Fox, Friends used to save NBC, and DWTS (kind of also Greys, and Desperate) save ABC. If shows are put on the nights as those big shows they will do good, if they are not thee show will struggle. ABC, FOX, and ABC are not like CBS where they can get any show to do good. I am willing to be once Hosewives or Greys left the air, all ABC's Sunday and Thursay would fail [look at what happened to NBC's Must See Thursday]. Pushing Daises has no Big Show on Wed on ABC to help it out. Nothing good is on Wed, if you look at Ratings nothing really does good that night. Had DWTS still been on Wed night the show would not be getting cancelled. |

Pushing Daisies always aired on Wednesdays followed by Private Practice and Dirty Sexy Money. |

DWtS is on for two hours before Eli Stone on Tuesdays and that still got the axe. Private Practice, while its numbers are still low, is one of the top rated
shows on Wednesday night. The overriding factor in PD being canceled is that there wasn't an audience for it, especially when put with Private Practice
and DSM on the same night. I think a better indicator of whether or not it would have survived would have been to put it in the same night as Ugly Betty.

Okay, ABC is now guilty of TWO of the biggest crimes in television history- cancelling My So-Called Life and Pushing Daisies. I'm sad to see the show go
the way of another Bryan Fuller masterpiece- Dead Like Me. Sad to see Eli Stone going too. Guess there's no room for fantasy on TV. :-(

OK ABC now you're required to cancel two shows I hate. Pick carefully: Lost, Grey's Anatomy, and Desperate Housewives

My favorite part is that the article announcing PD's cancellation also announced the pickup of Life on Mars, a show with no originality and no lasting
appeal.
