But I have honestly NEVER heard anyone from eastern Minnesota who sounds like the characters in Fargo. People from Canada sound more like that and people from North Dakota sound like that and people in western Minnesota sound like that.

I don't know any Minnesotan (and a good share of relatives from Minnesota or northern Wisconsin) who says south with a long O sound.
Funny though, none of the people in the Minnesota bar (or Marshall for that matter) have Minnesota accents. VERY distinct and almost Canadian.
They ALSO say 'SOWTH' (with a long O as in 'HOST') instead of 'south' and have very long O sounds and say 'you betcha' and 'she' as in 'she's a cold one', or 'she's gonna cost ya'. Same for northern Wisconsin.
Oh, and listen to conversations, you'll definitely hear 'The Accent' - as for Wisconsin - Lacrosse, Wausau, Chippewa, Eau Claire, even Green Bay - they all have 'The Accent'. True dat.
Also, the northern Wisconsin accent is different than most others. It's more nasal and dumber sounding. Watch "Escanaba in Da Moonlight!" That's what people in the northern parts of Wisconsin sound like. Also people in South Milwaukee sound like that for whatever reason. They say "Yaaahhh hey" a lot!
A true midwest accent is hard to do. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who can actually do it correctly. What you get is Fargo. The closest I've ever heard is the wife on Still Standing. She's pretty good at it.
