Re: Staten Island & fires: it's the least densely populated borough out of the 5 boroughs which comprise NYC. It tends to be a lot of 1 or 2 family homes especially on the South Shore (which I'm guessing is where Tommy's been stationed). There's more space between the houses so fire would be less likely to spread. House & car fires would be what he dealt w/for the most part. But there have been some incidents like when some LNG tanks went up or 9/11 when a lot of the North Shore fire teams responded. And a lot of off duty firefighters reported to the towers on 9/11. Almost 80 (of the 343) of the firefighters killed that day were were from Staten Island. Which for 5% of the population of the city is a lot.
I think the Staten Island transfer refers to the "Southern Comfort House" incident. Back after the New Year's Eve 2003 Scandal where 2 guys got into an argument w/Elvis and one bashed the other in the head w/a chair, sending him into a coma, news articles revealed that's where firefighters w/problems were sent to keep them out of trouble because it wasn't as busy. It was revealed subsequent to the incident several of the folks involved had DWI or DUI records. Now, back to the show, very interesting. I completely understand Mike & Johnny's frustration. And the part where he goes after Ground Zero vendors? They may have exaggerated a bit, but when I see some of the tchokes they're trying to sell on sacred ground/nearby, I've wanted to flip a few tables myself. It's one of the few things he's done on the show he shouldn't have been arrested for doing. His treatment of Shelia is pretty awful. Whatever happens, they have a kid together and he needs to get a grip. Though it's interesting in the promos she's shown drinking & tempting him to drink after AA. |

Quote: Have ANY TV characters ever heard of birth control? Honest to God, they really need to make characters who are supposed to be intelligent act that way. Don't even get me started on those ER whores...and they're supposed to be doctors! |

I'll bet Tommy still reeked of alcohol when he went to the AA meeting with his cousin the ex-priest.
It's got to drive him nuts to be stuck in Staten Island where there's no activity while his old company gets their nuts kicked in every day. He's got to transfer back sometime this season. The actor who plays "Sully " is only listed as a guest star so I'm hoping he won't be around forever. |

I'd forgotten how much I love this show. It's so fun watching Tommy's trainwreck of a life (and being thankful that it's not mine). Interesting to see two guys from OZ in this week's episode (Dean Winters as his cop brother and the guy who played Sully was Beecher from OZ). Kind of like Law & Order/SVU/CI where all the OZ guys keep showing up.

Is it really illegal to develop nudie pictures?
I never knew that. Franco looks pretty put of control in the previews. I hope he can kick the drug habit it looks like he is gonna have. |

I think the writers are deliberately trying to portray Tommy as alienated. Many firefighters are family people. Some take the job just so they can have time w/their kids that they wouldn't get otherwise (school trips, etc.). All he would've had to do w/his current Staten Island crew is mention that his wife took the kids & they probably would've pitched in & helped. But I do love how the quartet story line played out.
And they're trying to underscore his selfishness by having him have the stupid uncle fight instead of tracking down his kids or at the very least, asking for an Amber alert, which, w/his NYPD connections, he could probably do. |

Why isn't there more nudity?
Tommy's ex is a hottie, as is his cousin's widow he knocked up, and the new firefighter may be a bitch, but she's got a nice rack. Come on ladies, it's Fx! Don't you even watch the other shows from your time slot? Nip/Tuck and The Shield (although not as much this year) both have nudity. Show us the titties! |

The soap opera plot lines are getting kind of old. I think it's a lot more interesting to see the work relationships. Such as the one w/Franco.
And I think they're making Laura a pretty intersting character. When I saw the previews where Kenny gets served w/papers, I thought, oh no, they're going to make her into some sort of shrill PC type. I was pleasantly suprised by how they're playing that part of it. When she confronted Kenny, she acknowledged he was her supervisor & that he had a right to comment on her firefighting skills, but he had no right to insult her. She let him know what the problem was and gave him several chances to apologize. She was even willing to settle it w/him outside of the structure (threatening to beat him up). He was the one who pulled the "I'm your superior" card on her. |

Quote:I was thinking the same thing. Didn't he get enough of that on OZ? But it explains why he was the third or fourth choice for the role. Stars like Matt Dillon turned it down, and now we know why. Not much of a career-enhancer to be playing the buffoon for Denis Leary. |

Last night's episode was just okay, IMO, compared to the others this season. I loved the scene where all the guys at the firehouse were talking to the girl (Laura?) about camaraderie and listing all the names they called each other - too funny. Loved the monkey haircut. I think they are pushing the envelope with Jesus in Tommy's apartment (but I actually like the fact that someone out there is pushing the envelope). Especially the "what does Jesus look like?" answer "Mel Gibson". hee hee hee Interesting that Tommy's daughter showed up at the end, but of course they didn't address that in the previews for next week.

The scene w/Sean & the monkey in the vet's office was very funny. As for the Laura plotline, I wish they would let the rest of the guys see the fact that Laura did acknowledge he had a right to criticize her firefighting abilities and she did try to deal w/the insult outside of the dept.
The Kenny/Laura situation is more like what it would've been like if Tommy tried to pull rank on New Mike when he objected to the comment Tommy made about him. I don't know if it would've changed anyone's minds, but I'd prefer they know the whole story, which is that Kenny was the one who pulled the official dept. card first by reminding Laura he outranked her when she told him to apologize or she'd take care of him outside of the system. I'm guessing that's why he went for sensitivity training instead of the deny everything tactic. He's trying to make Laura look like the bad guy (or person). And his comments to her after the locker prank on Sean were another attempt of his to prove how much of one of the guys he is. I hope the rest of the guys find out how he tried to pull rank on her. |

Best line of the night - when Tommy's Dad said that he'd had an affair that lasted 36 years because he could see the future in his girlfriend's ass, and Tommy said something like "how far would you have had to stick your head up her ass to find out that the Yankees were going to lose four straight to the Red Sox?"
