I saw the Cycle 06 marathon on Oxygen over the weekend. I know that Tyra had issues with Danielle Evans' pronounced Southern accent. What I didn't realize until this weekend was that, having seen every ANTM cycle so far, Danielle was the only person whose accent pissed Tyra off. She said nothing about Nnenna Agba's accent. Fatima, ditto. I guess that in Tyra's world, an African accent from the mouth of a dark-skinned African woman is seen as exotic and classy, but a dark-skinned African-American woman with a Southern accent, even if it is intelligible, is terrible. Natasha Galkina and Anya Kop are native Russophones, and had somewhat thick accents, and not once did Tyra publicly take issue. Not even Kathy Hoxit got slammed for her accent, and it was ten times thicker than Danielle's. Even Jaslene Gonzalez's accent, the thickest of all the ANTM hamsters, didn't pose a liability for the show. Ditto for many of the other women of color on the show, even if they came from urban or rural areas where accents are prominent.
