Taweret became seen, very early in Egyptian history, as a deity of protection in pregnancy and childbirth. Pregnant women wore amulets with her name or likeness to protect their pregnancies. As a protector, she often was shown with one arm resting on the sa symbol, which symbolized protection, and on occasion she carried an ankh, the symbol of life, or a knife, which would be used to threaten evil spirits. When paired with another deity, she became the demon-wife of Apep, the original god of evil. Since Apep was viewed as residing below the horizon, and only present at night, evil during the day then was envisaged as being a result of Taweret's maleficence. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tawaret Smokey = Apep? |

So... I'm cleaning out the attic and came across my collection of Games magazines. The very first issue, from 1977 coincidentally, contains an article
about "Rebirth: The Tibetan Game of Liberation". It's in the magazine, because in 1977, a book was published with an English translation of the
game. There's a picture of the Wheel of Life (similar to one I posted in the Locke's Map thread), as well as a picture of the "game board",
as painted by Pema Dorje.
The game is easy to play, and is essentially a version of Chutes and Ladders. You need a 6-sided die. The board is 104 squares (not 108, unfortunately). Each square represents your latest incarnation. Each square has directions on what other square to proceed to, depending on the value you roll (e.g. on a 1, go to square 27, on a 2, go to square 17, etc.). The higher numbers are closer to enlightenment. The lowest squares are versions of hell. You start on square 24, "The Heavenly Highway". The article provides the commentary on this square, starting with: We are at the start of the game, in the present human existence, con- fronted with six roads of different colors. The fall of the die takes us to one of the six karmic destinies: white for the gods, blue for humans, green for animals, yellow for ghosts, black smoke for the hells, and red for the jealous asuras. But karma is not fate; it means activity. There are various references to Dharma, naturally, but the mention of "black smoke" made me look further. In the game board, there are a couple 8-armed donkey wheels depicted: square 26 "Wheel-Turning King" and square 69 "Tantric Wheel-Turning King". ![]()
Square 59 is "Shambala". Square 102 is "Turning the Wheel of Dharma". Perhaps there's more to see... I haven't gone through all the squares. If you want to play it, there's an online version here: http://www.users.qwest.net/~cmcenter1/rebirth/. Start on 24. |

I'm still developing this theory, and I would love to get your inputs. When Ben stole Alex, he committed a grave mistake in the eyes of the island. As a punishment, no more babies will be born on the island. This punishment was probably lifted when Boone died and Aaron was born which incidentally happened on the same day. "Boone was a sacrifice that the island demanded." Instead of accepting this punishment of not having babies, Ben tried to defy the island by bringing in Juliet, a fertility doctor. Ben didn't want his beloved Alex to die (That's why Ben was so against Karl too). To convince Juliet to stay, Ben said he will cure her sister's cancer. Nobody gets cancer on the island, acc to Ben. But the island punished him again by giving him a tumor. Again, instead of accepting his fate, Ben manipulated the survivors of 815, so Jack would cure him. Ben succeeded in having Jack operate on him. But this was not what the island wanted. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Most of the survivors of 815 were brought to the island to be judged. It is not a coincidence that Sayid, Jin, Kate, Sawyer, Ana Lucia, Mr. Eko were all murderers. It is the duty of the Others to make sure that the innocent/good ones will be evacuated from the island. Ana Lucia's group: Goodwin was able to make a list fast. So, they were able to get the good ones, especially the kids out. Ana Lucia asked Goodwin why she was not taken, and he replied that she was not a good person. As to Bernard and Libby, either they did something heinous too, or Ana Lucia was just able to protect them. Powerful as the island may be, Ana Lucia can still exercise her free will. We know that Mr. Eko had been judged already. As for Ana, she died bec Michael exercised his free will to kill her. Jack's group: In one episode, it was said that Ethan was not able to make a list, and I think this caused the Others in failing in their duty to separate the good ones from those who need to be judged. Ethan, a doctor, became preoccupied with Claire and her pregnancy. Some of the people in Jack's group should have been taken off the island months ago. The resistance shown by Jack and his people was also a variable. I think it is wrong to assume that the survivors were brought to the island for the same reason. Some may have just been there by chance. In one episode, Mikhail told Kate that she was not a good person. Also, when Locke decided to join the Others, the Others rejected Kate because of what she did outside the island. She still has to be judged. That was why when some of the survivors were able to leave the island, Ben (and Locke) had to make them come back. The reason why they crashed in the island in the first place had not yet been accomplished. "The island is not yet through with them." Locke, a good man outside of the island, was probably brought to the island as he was chosen by the island to lead the Others. The island made him walk, healed his gun shot wound, and ultimately resurrected him. I believe that Locke was indeed resurrected by the island. If the new Locke was just the black smoke in disguise, there was no reason for Locke to show himself to the Ajira survivors while Ben was passed out. Also, by extension, Christian would just be the smokey too, but Locke was with the Ajira survivors at about the same time Christian was talking to Sun. So, 2 smokeys then? Don't think so. I think Walt was previously taken by the Others for the same reason that the kids from Ana Lucia's group were taken. They just didn't anticipate Michael's desperation to get his son back. Then, Ben, for selfish reasons, abused this desperation for his own needs, i.e., to get to Jack with the end view of having Jack operate on him. We have to make distinctions now on which ones were decisions of the island, and which ones were Ben's decisions. I'm not sure if Charlie was taken to the island in order to be judged too. Drug addiction seems a minor offense. But if so, I think he died after he has changed his ways. After a series of tests, he finally rejected drugs. The island decided that he passed the test. I'm trying to make distnctions between deaths caused by men (Ana Lucia, Libby) and "accidental" deaths (Boone, Charlie). So-called accidental deaths were probably the decision of the island, but not those caused by men (free will). A popular theory among fans is that the show is about reincarnation. This could be true. Some of the survivors were in the island to be judged whether they have learned their lesson already. Again, some of them were there by chance only, and had to be removed. If judgment is that the survivor has not yet learned his lesson, he will die and reincarnated and brought back to the island again for another judgment. Our survivors may have originally been part of the same group of Egyptians who have always found themselves on that same island. I'm also thinking that the survivors of 815 were the same people (souls?) from the Black Rock that shipwrecked on the island years/decades ago. |

Due to the longevity of the post, I didn't want to quote it, but I went to the site Screerider gave and played the game. Instead ofusing a dice, I just
clicked on the option for rolling one everytime. Right after I got to level 102 "Turning the Dharma wheel", it went to "Demonstration of
Miracles". I thought that was interesting because both Ben and John turned the wheel at some point in their lives and both have received miracles. Maybe
Rose came on down and turned the big wheel also. (Price is Right reference :) )

Yeah... I hope I didn't give the impression you need to role dice to play the website version. They have a randomizer there in the form of that spinning
"prayer wheel" that will do it for you. Are you can do as you did and just click through the possible results for each square... or just go directly
to any square you want using the main page.
Interesting how PoChop brought up the Prayer Wheels in the Spoiler thread here, back when we saw Miles use the vacuum cleaner to talk to the ghost. What comes around, goes around. |

Minor correction, Sun's baby was conceived on the island that is why she had to leave to give birth. It was Clair's baaaabaaeeee that was conceived
off island.

Fairly obvious to me that the "Hostiles"...the "inhabitants" of the island are there to protect the natural order of things. It very well
may be possible for Variables to change the course of history. But the Hostiles are clearly the defenders of what is "meant to happen."

Or maybe the baby problem began after the "incident" daniel was trying to prevent, that doesn't explain the fertility g.o.d.d.e.s.s. though unless it was build after the incident, which i don't think is the case. I do know that was Ben main purpose for bring juliet to the island so she could try to prevent the childbirth deaths. She never could sove the problem. |

First time I'm actually going to attempt a grand theory...
We've seen that Eloise and Widmore are at odds, much like Widmore and Ben. These points aside, they (read: former leaders of the others) are enemies working towards a common goal: ensuring that whatever happened, happened. On the island, before the incident, Eloise and Widmore talked to Jack, Kate, and later, (speculation) when he returns, Desmond, so as to make sure they get where they belong. This way, Abaddon gets Locke where he needs to go, and Eloise shows up in Desmond's life when it "Flashes Before His Eyes" to make sure that he does what he needs to do to push the button to save the world. The common goal, as the goal of the Others, is to preserve the miracles of the island. As Widmore recently told Locke in "The Life and Death of Jeremy Benthem," there's a war coming, John, and you need to be there so the right side wins. After the Incident, where the 1977 survivors try to change the future but inadvertantly cause it, they will return to the present where John Locke leads the others in a war for the island against Ilana and her people--a resurgence of the Dharma Initiative in 2007. There are a few things that lead me to this claim. First, at Comic-Con, Pierre Chang made a video (may be canon or non-canon) that someone needed to reform Dharma. Furthermore, Ilana's faction belongs to neither Widmore nor the others. When her people grabbed Miles, they told him explicitly not to work for Widmore. Furthermore, had they been members of the others, they would have handled Locke and Ben much differently. As we've seen in the end of every season, there has been a preview of the focus of the season-to-come. We worked with the hatch near the end of season one. Were truly introduced to the others near the end of season two. We met Naomi near the end of season three, bringing the Kahana into play. All of the flashforwards hinted at the focus of season five. And now, the Dharma Initiative has been highlighted along with Ilana's group. This war for control of the island and its uniqueness (healing, aging, miracles, etc. etc.) will be the highlight of the final season, where John will try to protect the island and Sawyer et al will deliberate which side to fight for, the people that the worked with for three years in the 1970s or the survivors/others they met first. |

Maybe at the end of this season, they blow up the island. And like we saw with Charlie's death, fate still happens. So, now the plane still crashes and
they all meet, etc. but a totally different way. Like Charley still died, but in a different way (not lightning or drowning).
That would leave us wondering after the cliff hanger, because we know that "what happened, can't now happen" but come next season, the losties still meet and possibly crash etc. |

The time-line/Island trying to course-correct, as it were, could be amusing.

Apologies if this has already been suggested, but I'm starting to think all this has something to do with either biblical figures or aliens.
I know it's a broad net to cast, but it's just the feeling I get. |

I've always got the "good v. evil" theme from this show but last night it was very blatant for me. Jacob and NotJacob on the beach - Jacob wants
to see the good in everyone, help them find their path, NotJacob sees that people are not so good and wants to manipulate and control others to do his bidding
and eventually kill Jacob so he can take over.
The ship at the beginning - that was the Black Rock right? |

The Statue seems to have more of a crocodile head than a hippo head IMO, which would make him Sobek:
From wikipedia: Sobek's ambiguous nature led some Egyptians to believe that he was a repairer of evil that had been done, rather than a force for good in itself, for example, going to Duat to restore damage done to the dead as a result of their form of death. He was also said to call on suitable gods and goddesses required for protecting people in situation, effectively having a more distant role, nudging things along, rather than taking an active part. In this way, he was seen as a more primal god, eventually becoming regarded as an avatar of the primal god Amun, who at that time was considered the chief god. When his identity finally merged, Amun had become merged himself with Ra to become Amun-Ra, so Sobek, as an avatar of Amun-Ra, was known as Sobek-Ra. |
