That's why he knew to blast the tunnel to it. But Dharma had to know about the wheel. Halliwax had his own parka...which means he went down in that cave alot. There was a ladder and everything. I doubt Dharma built the Orchid hatch and the transport pod right at the entrance of that cavern and didnt ever look into it...

Well, see, i dont think turning the wheel makes the island lost to the outside world completely, or forever. Obviously the wheel has been turned many times before (otherwise, why is it there??) And the island eventually becomes visible and findable again...or else Dharma could have never found it and bring people to it...so the island "moving" is neither permanent nor absolute. And Im pretty sure Dharma did turn that wheel a few times (losing a man at least once) before understanding its properties and building the Orchid hatch against it to try to manipulate its properties to a lesser extant.

But if Halliwax went often into the wheel room, why did Ben have to blast into it? Plus, something about that icy room made it seem very old & untouched. The lantern was ancient & the ladder was rotten.

Posts: 317 (06/01/08 8:58 PM) Registered user Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	Trust me, lots of think about that donkey wheel cavern and Dharma are problematic for me as well :P But we know Dharma was purged in 1992, and if Dharma covered up the cavern eventually at some point, that cave was probably untouched for at least 12-15 years...that seems about right. Thats my biggest problem. Im assuming that was the only entrance to the donkey wheel...and was covered up by the transport pod that Dharma built...otherwise why did BEn have to go through the trouble of blasting a hole? And if there was another underground entrance connection somewhere...Ben certainly wouldnt have risked going through the Orchid station to get there with Keamy and his men...so that had to be the only way. So, the question is, when did Dharma stop going into the cavern and decide to cover it up and use it for smaller experiments (moving just bunnies in time than the entire island with everyone else :P) and why did Halliwax keep his parka around if they never went into the cavern again??

If there were natives on the island (either from an ancient civilization and/or the Black Rock) perhaps the donkey wheel pit could have been hidden from view by sending it into the future during the time that Dharma constructed stuff on the island. I don't know, maybe 1 degree movement of the wheel just transports the immediate area in time, or there's another mechanism that form a setting of "move lite." In that case the Dharma folks would only have seen a tunnel which they presumed to be relatively unimportant and that's why they blocked it off. The video only seemed to be concerned that the transport room was built "close" to the deposit of strange exotic matter. It doesn't mean that they actually saw it or knew exactly where it was. As to why there was a metal ladder leading down to the wheel (was it metal???) maybe someone from the Black Rock installed it? Or someone from the big foot civilization???

Perhaps they were using the donkey wheel when needed, but then something happened (the incident?) and they decided 'never again'. So they covered the whole entrance up and used the metal story to make sure whatever new hamsters got assigned to the station didn't uncover it, yet could still experiment with the properties of the exotic matter nearby.

There's no way to turn that wheel 360 degrees, which you want so that donkey can knock himself out just going around and around and around and around... A donkey wheel is verticle and turns 360 degrees, just like a hamster wheel (some Googled "proof"): Check out that ass!

Ok, now I'm scared. I just posted a donkey wheel photo in another thread. Am I mind melding with Scree? It just goes to show you that we probably need a dedicated donkey wheel thread! Here's another question. Was the video tape rewinding or was it actually recording time going backwards when the experiment was activated by Halliwax? That would be something of ghostbusters proportions. On the other hand just about every Dharma film or video is screwed up with breaks and splices omitting key items of information so it might not mean anything. I actually agree with you here. If the wheel made the island lost to the outside world forever, then Ben wouldn't need Sayid to be assassinating people to protect it. No need to protect something that's gone forever.

Nothing actually changed regarding the path from your backyard to your house, so you should be able to leave your backyard without issue. But, if you turned around, you'd see the Island and not be able to get back to your backyard. Similarly, in the ocean, the water should be able to flow out, leaving a dip, that, when the Island left, would be filled back in by the surrounding ocean.

Its POSSIBLE the Dharma people didnt know about the Donkey Wheel. But VERY unlikely given that Halliwax had his very own parka stashed in the Orchid station. :P If the idea is that he went spulunking in the caverns for party ice from time to time, and never found that ladder or that wheel...then i stand corrected. Thats sounds more plausible.
