Still waiting to hear how much Cowell, Seacrest, Abdul, Jackson and Fuller donated.

I'm sure we'll wait a lifetime on that one. I think their donation of time is all we're going to get, or at least hear about. Didn't Seacrest ask in a moment of technical difficulty how much Simon actually donated?
All Idol did was take: take people's money (a lot of it probably went to overhead), take advertising dollars, take credit for the donations and get tax cuts for it. |

My problem with these "telethons" is that we KNOW a whole bunch goes to overhead. If I knew my money was going DIRECTLY to a child to pay for his school or medicine - I would probably give. I just do not trust them.

What was the deal with Ryan butchering the opening segement, did he not realize they were live when he re-did it? That seemed pretty awkward.

So you watch the show, then you send your money to a charity you trust. It's just as easy to send it off to Unicef or Save the Children directly.

The video of those suffering kids was really very affecting.
I will make a point of contributing money to a charity that feeds the poor this month - but it won't be this one. I do not trust these people farther than I can throw them. |

Quote: You forgot insulting poor Africans for the condition of their homes. Maybe by Simon's standards, the conditions in that dying woman's house were bad, but I'm guessing that for that place - it was average. |

What if that woman next to Simon was thinking, "Oh hell no, I cleaned up in here all damn day, and bitch tits here says its 'abominable.'"

you just know they didn't give jack shit because if they had, they certainly wouldn't have missed the chance to brag about how simon paula randy and ryan donated a million dollars each

Are they ever going to announce how much collectivly between the stars, the corporations and the average public they actually raised like all other telethon types do or is it all a big secret?
I didn't watch so I didn't give but I agree that if I was, since they did name the charities supposedly that would be receiving cash in America..I'd just give directly instead of trusting Idol to give my full donation. |

The comedy parts sucked. Glad I didn't buy a ticket for the Walt Disney Center for just those few performances there. I had it on mute, and did something else except for a few of the performances. There was something totally slimely as well trying to make Simon and Ryan, let alone Paula, over as some kind of humanitarians. And showing a welfare mother with 10 kids like we should donate. I would donate for some birth control.
and really, all I could think was why isn't Simon building a school or something like Oprah, he's supposedly now worth over $300+ million. There's something always rotten in Denmark about people with that much wealth chastizing ordinary people to "give." And then what do they do, they show a commercial for Mercedes Benz. |

The commercials were hilarious. At one point they cut from showing the people of Africa with 12 children living in one room to a commercial showing a mom complaining to her 11 year old daughter about the kid's cell phone bill.

I donated online last night. What I did like about the way the show was presented was that they told you how much things were. Like $10 for a net, how much to save a child - all spelled out, all letting you know that any donation will mean something. Online, they also give you an option to allow them to e-mail you with how much was raised and where it went. You can also click another button to "opt out" of marketing.
I'm all for donating - but it's really nice that you can see where it's going. If you donate to any charity you don't really know where it's going. They all have overhead, but you can research different categories here to see how much actually goes to where you think it should be going: Charity Navigator All in all, I think they presented something new to 95% of Americans who don't get off the couch and work towards something bigger.
