My biggest beef with the gay rights movement is that there has been no coordinated effort to dispel the silly arguments against gay marriage--arguments like "The government will make the church marry gays" or "They'll teach gay marriage in schools." I know the law in Maine specified that churches could do what they want, but when groups like the National Organization for Marriage pay for television ads which predict future "problems", there ought to be commercials which directly point out the idiocy of those arguments.

They would be partners and they would love each other and die for one another in battle. It was a very close relationship. But Mr. Pedo would generally also have a wife who he was MARRIED to. Ancient Asian societies also engaged in sexual behaviors way different than what we today would consider normal. But still the pairing of a man and a woman for life for the purposes of procreation and family building was considered a MARRIED couple regardless of who or what either of them were pleasuring themselves with. I'm just saying that after thousands of years of human civilization I don't see why we have to redefine the term. Come up with another one. The impetus for allowing same sex-marriage is to give gay couples the same benefits that straight couples receive. The reason why it needs to be "marriage" specifically and not anything else is because employers, insurance companies, hospitals, etc. find a way to circumvent providing necessary benefits to gay couples with "civil unions." If you're really going to give gay couples the same benefits, you'd probably have to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act at the Federal level and pass antidiscrimination laws with teeth. It'd be a lot easier and a more effective use of time to legalize same-sex marriage.
