(I never considered the LOTR a fantasy book, I considered it an "epic"). It turned me off anything dorky until I was convinced to give George RR Martin a try. Seriously it tried SO HARD to be the LOTR and I just remember it being... dumb. Just dumb. Fuck, I'm getting irritated just thinking about suffering through that retarded book. Happy place.

Moiraine was my favorite character, but I guess she ended up dying in the fifth book anyways. There was also some guy named Loial who made me think Legolas all the time.

I liked it a lot and am glad Sanderson split it up into three volumes. There was just too much left to wrap up before it ended. And yeah, Mat became the best character, by far, in the entire series. Additionally, all Perrin content could have been reduced to around 100 words a book and I'd have been content. God, he sucked. I've read Elantris and the Mistborn trilogy from Sanderson now as well and I gotta say...the guy is good and writes interesting stuff. Spoiler [+] The way Rand kills Graendal provided many laffos. Brilliant!

Plus I know of two english bookstores in Paris, but I haven't made it to them yet. I've been too busy working, getting stuff I need for the house (finally got some curtains), and going to the Saturday open air market for veggies, fruit, cheese, pork, chicken (complete with feet and head), etc. Though we did go to the biggest flea market in Paris yesterday (quite a let down as it was pretty much just pricey antiques or rap/hiphop music, clothing, shoes, hats, etc) and Notre Dame today complete with All Saints Day masses going on nonstop.

What's interesting about Name of the Wind is that much of it is fantasy cliche, but it is SO well written and engaging, that it seems brand new. I couldn't put it down.
