After a good week last week (which included Mother's Day), sales of Idol albums came down to earth with a thud in many cases this week. Clay drops from No. 4 to No. 18 on the Billboard chart, selling 21,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan, for a two-week total of 115,000. That's a 78% drop, which is one of the steeper second-week plunges I've seen. Jordin slides 18-23, selling 18,000, a 27% drop, for a total of 758,000. Carrie's Carnival Ride is right behind, inching up 25-24, but that's deceptive, as its 16,000 sales are down 28% from the previous week. Total is now 2.10 million. Some Hearts drops 60-84, selling nearly 9,000, a 29% drop, for a total of 6.42 million. Daughtry is down 27-30 on the chart, selling 15,000, 27% lower than the previous week, for a total of 4.06 million. And Phil nearly slips off the chart, moving 118-190 and selling in the mid 3,000s, a 47% drop, for a total of 24,000. An exploration of uncharted Idol waters follows. Top seller among the non-charted Idols is Kellie this week, with 2,400, down from 2,900, for a total of 759,000. Josh sold 2,300, down from 3,400, for a total of 43,000. Kelly's Breakaway sold 1,900, down from 2,400, total 5.99 million. My December drops to 800 from 1,000 for a total of 765,000. Bo sold 1,300, down from 2,900, for a total of 54,000. Blake sold 1,100, off from 1,600, total 294,000. Bucky sold 1,000, down from 2,000, for a total of 343,000. Elliott sold 700, down from 1,200, total 509,000. Mandisa sold 500, down from 700, for a total of 80,000. Randy sold 500, down from 700, for a total of 30,000. Fantasia, following her appearance on the show is up to 400, from 300, for a total of 513,000. Clay sold 300, same as last week, of A Thousand Different Ways. Total is 526,000. Katharine stays at 200 for a total of 371,000. Kimberley drops to 100 from 200 for a total of 21,000. Taylor stays at 100 for a total of 702,000. Ruben drops below the line at which I can report his sales this week, but that should change for the better after his performance last night on the show (although that slot almost seemed like an afterthought). His total is 237,000. Also falling below the line: Constantine. Total isstill 25,000. |

Contestants influence download chart again (moderately)
There are a few interesting spin-offs from last week's Idol semifinal song choices on the digital songs chart compiled by Nielsen SoundScan, but first, let's look at the Idols themselves. Jordin's No Air remains at No. 7, selling 85,000, a 9% drop, for a total of 1.78 million. Tattoo drops 73-87, selling 15,000, down 9%, for a total of 1.6 million. (There is a much better song titled Tattoo, by the way, from The Who Sell Out album. Just a random observation.) Carrie's Last Name vaults 69-54, selling 22,000, up 20%, for a total of 117,000. All-American Girl is down 72-80, selling 16,000, a 5% drop, for a total of 520,000. Before He Cheats is up 128-124, selling 10% (a 3% gain) for a total of 2.33 million. And Daughtry's Feels Like Tonight slips 80-88, selling 15,000, down 5%, for a total of 415,000. Home moves 166-175, selling 8,000, a 2% drop, for a total of 1.48 million. Chris Brown's With You climbs 41-25 on the chart, selling 39,000, a 56% boost, largely from David A.'s Idol performance. Switchfoot's Dare You to Move returns at No. 45, selling 26,000, after David C. sang it. Cook's rendition of First Time Ever I Saw Your Face propels Roberta Flack's version back on the chart at 152 with 9,000 downloads. And Syesha's If I Ain't Got You revives the Alicia Keys original at No. 168, with 8,000. Iz's Over the Rainbow remains on the chart, moving 94-104 and selling 12,000, some of that thanks to Jason. And Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline hangs on, though dropping 86-141 and selling 9,000, as the aura of the David A. cover fades. |

Actually Clay's album is much better than his last 2 albums, Quite a satisfying album. He really needs radio airplay.

^^ Agreeance, it's a really good album.
But I'm not holding my breath for radio play. |

I tried to download "Dream Big" from Cook but it "was no longer available". What is up with that?
How I long for the old days of the classic Billboard Hot 100 so that we can get a legitimate measure of how the idols are doing. Today's charts mean absoltely nothing for song airplay. |

I am such a dork. Somehow, seeing the Collective Souls version of The World I Know on the charts made me happy. Damn there version pales in comparison to
Cooks.

At least Clay didn't drop another 80% this week.

I expected a bigger increase in numbers for Carrie following a performance on the ACMs on Sunday 5/18 and her finale performance on Idol Wednesday night I A
60% increase is still great but damn this album is struggling to maintain it's sales.
How did Daughtry increase by 36%? he didn't perform on idol (unless I missed something).... |

sadly fanny, I think you are right...
I didn't realize the mere mention of an artist could increase sales by 36%, pretty impressive indeed. |
