I'm just throwing it out there. Who would be considered an anti hero on Survivor?

Rob Mariano?

Rob Cesternino in Amazon I think would be the best example--he was sneaky but it was usually at the expense of Jenna and Heidi, plus he had a sense of humor so
he got away with it.
Boston Rob in the post-switch episodes of Marquesas (especially the merge)...perhaps ASS too but that depends on the person. Chris in the last few episodes of Vanuatu Cirie? Maybe. More so in Micronesia since she was outplaying fan favorites like Ozzy and Yau-man but still retained popularity. Jonathan after the merge in CI |

In a way, Hatch himself isn't really a villain either. Even after he won, half the audience in that poll thought that he didn't do anything wrong. |

Wasn't Cesternino labeled "The biggest villain since Richard Hatch" in promos at the F6 in Amazon?

I don't remember that, but I do remember a lot of people giving him crap about not being a good little shepard leading Christy to the win.

I think Chris was a really good example of an anti-hero. The fact that he defeated the feminazi alliance and single-handedly took down a 6 person alliance is
pretty damn heroic. But he made point to be a total asshole when he was doing it, which made him kind of villainous too.

I think Coach is a pretty good example of an anti-hero. He was despised by the public, yet played a completely honest game with lots of integrity.

Is an anti-hero not the same thing as a villain?

An anti-hero is someone who is a rival to the hero, but is still against the villain. A good example would be Knuckles from the Sonic universe.

Or Snape.

As for Cesternino--I wasn't around here during Amazon but I remember he usually got a positive response from viewers. He was weaselly yet charming enough that you could root for him, especially compared to Brian the season before. |

I wasn't here either, but I remember at SurvivorCentral that various people wrote articles disparaging Rob. I don't know. I know Lex didn't like
him, but he's in an entirely different universe mentally.

An anti-hero is someone who is well meaning but misunderstood so is thought to be bad when he/she really isn't (eg. James Dean's character in Rebel
Without a Cause). For Survivor, the best example is Sean Rector.

I would say an anti-hero is someone without "heroic" qualities that you're still supposed to be rooting for/not rooting against. So likeable
villains wouldn't count.
Examples I can think of: Brian H. (possibly) Rob C. Rob M. (All-Stars) Todd Parvati Fang (for a time) |

How can you not root against a sexist asshole like Brian?

SkyDreamer wrote: I never took him seriously as a sexist. The comment about the women doing his laundry I think was made to be tongue in cheek. At least that's the impression I got. Would anyone consider Sean K an anti hero? He wasn't a villain, but was too dense and hypocritical in his rationalizations to be truly likeable* *General consensus. I thought he was hilarious and awesome. |

An anti-hero is someone who is a rival to the hero, but is still against the villain. A good example would be Knuckles from
the Sonic universe.
- The Raro Brats? - Rivals to the Aitu 4 but still against Jonathan - Kenny and Crystal? - Rivals to Sugar, Bob and Matty but still against Randy and Corinne A character who doesn't fit the typical hero mold and may even have characteristics more suited for villains--yet they're still a protagonist. - Rob C, Cirie in Micronesia, Stephenie in Guatemala, Boston Rob, Kenny, Todd, Chris (backstabbers who are still heroes to some of the audience) An anti-hero is someone who is well meaning but misunderstood so is thought to be bad when he/she really isn't (eg. James Dean's character in Rebel Without a Cause). - This is clearly Coach - Had the best intentions to play an honourable game and take the strongest to the end but still disliked by the audience. |
