Wax Lips memories... In the hot summer of 1957, my cousin & I asked to walk to the corner store to buy some penny candies & wax lips, and were granted permission from our Moms. We did not stop to put on shoes, and proceeded to walk up the shady street's sidewalk toward the corner.

At the corner of the street was a gas station and just around the corner was the store. We began to cross the gas station's concrete, which was no longer in the shade of the trees that lined the street. All at once, our poor little bare feet began to burn! Well being all of 6 years old, we did not know what to do. My cousin sat down and lifted her feet in the air, so I followed her lead. We sat there, waving our feet in the air while our buns began to burn; so we did what any dumb 6 year old would do -- we screamed!!

We screamed so loudly that our mothers heard us a half a block away and came running like mad to see what was wrong. After they stopped laughing, they picked us up and carried us the rest of the way to the store so we could buy our wax lips -- good thing we didn't get them before our feet started to burn, or I fear we would have had a bag filled with melted lips -- that concrete was really HOT!! But those were the hardest earned wax lips we ever had! ~ Sally from Ohio

My fun cousins Tenda' & Roni and me would have a blast on the stoop, gettin' all wet and whatnot from the open fire hydrant my neighbor Boo would open up on those very hot Summer days I'd spend at my Auntee's. We'd eat Red Hot Dollars and smoke candy Kool cigarettes, tryin' to be all like my older cousins! But the best fun we had was wearin' these big ol' wax lips! My Uncle used to have a fun word for us when we be wearin' these lips..hey, I was 5 years old and my Uncle was always helpful , toweling us off and givin' us spare change to buy new wax lips! .
