Go to the fireworks on the 3rd. Go see the new modern wing of the Art Institute. Go have a drink at the top of the Hancock Building--preferably right before
sunset. (You'll overpay for the drink, but the views are great and you can skip the observation deck there and the Sears Tower.) Take an architecture tour.
The Chicago Architecture Foundation gives the best ones.
