I'd vote for Chuck Berry, James Brown, Little Richard, Tine Turner, the Supremes or B B King as being more iconic - the first three were true crossover
artists before Jackson even began to perform. The "authorities" were really upset that white kids were listening to that black music. And B B King
brought the blues to the white kids (so did a lot of other bluesmen and women, but he's likely the best known).

I totally think that MJ was a great singer, and his best years were as a young teen. Songs like Got To Be There are very strong. He was on top of his game
with the Thriller album. I don't dismiss him. But I also don't overstate. He didn't do anything "significant" after Thriller.
You don't have to play an instrument to be significant, witness Sinatra, Presley, Garland, Redding, Cooke, Ross. |
