You people make me laugh. I'm pretty much a laid-back supervisor. I don't dictate when people arrive or leave for work, provided they put in their usual hours. There's no official office attire or flair requirements -- people just need to be presentable to customers. And we all get along fine, joke around, have lunch together occasionally and drink beer on Friday afternoons (in the office). It's sufficiently unstructured that we avoid hiring people under 25 because they don't have enough self-discipline.
Still, when someone's performance is sliding or not improving, then something has to be done, right? By the time I've lowered the boom on someone, it's after three or four times of having said something in a more relaxed manner. Maybe I should just resort to writing memos that tell people to get their ass in gear or find another job -- would that please you Sucksters? Or should my collegues just sit around all day posting messages on stupid-ass electronic bulletin boards?
You might not get invited to anymore bumper pool parties, though.
