From a supervisor's point of view, they are digging the rut deeper, not climbing out of it. This is the fourth person in five years that I've noticed this pseudo-hibernation behavior when they gets some critical remarks. All have either quit or being shown the door because they couldn't turn it around and get on par with the rest of the office. I've experienced this kind of behavior in relationships (and it often leads to capitulation/apologies on my part), but will someone explain why someone does it at work when it could cost them their job?
