to me anything east of the Mississippi is east - I loved to rile this Alabama guy I worked with by calling him an easterner

The Midwest is Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missourah, Kansas, Nebraska, and the Dakotas, and occasionally you'll hear
people from Kentucky and Wyoming sneaking in. If you think Cleveland and Fargo must be two different regions, I'd argue that they're a lot more similar
than SF and LA or NYC and Baltimore.

Texas is a region in itself.

Isn't Texas considered the Southwest? That's the setting of "Lonesone Dove" arguably the best western ever. Havening driven I-70 more than I ever wanted to, anything west of Harrisburg and east of the Rockies is the Midwest to me. Chicago is a fun city to visit but honesty I would prefer to fly over the heartland and never have to set foot in it again.

I think more Arizona and New Mexico when I think Southwest. Texas varies to much. We have our wanna be east coast major cities. Our they should have been born
in Alabama boon dock areas, and our relatively normal suburbs.

yeah, Houston is more southern than western, San Antonio is definitely southwestern and I'm not sure about Dallas or Austin

Dallas really wants to be part of New York.

Fat chance unless they start filming "The Real Housewives of Dallas".

I liked Portland, but if the whole country was made of west coasters, we'd have been defeated by the Canookians.

Austin is like San Francisco, San Jose, and Seattle rolled into one. The Metroplex is much more Southern than Houston (I'm thinking Bible Belt South). And Houston is just odd with no real comparison. Like Anti said, Texas is a region in and of itself, too large and diverse to be grouped with any other region. |

The only people that care about that shit hole named Texas are Texans.

I actually agree that Dallas itself is wannabe NYC while the rest of the Metroplex is Southern in that Bible Belt South way.

The only people who call it a shithole are Californians and dumb East Coasters.

Zzunk, if you drive a car or rely on fossil fuels to heat or provide electricity for where you live and work, then you do care about Texas, or Houston at least
- it's the O&G headquarters of the US - remember how the hurricanes spiked the price of gas?
and Austin is a kinda cool place |

It's so easy to get Texans riled up. I've been Austin twice, San Antonio and Houston. And I've driven from Dallas to Austin. Austin is nice, but
it's so far from the ocean or mountains. Sort of hot, too. San Antonio is okay and it has some great history. Best chili con carne I've every had, but
it's still way too isolated. Houston is just a there. Muggy, flat, downtown is deader than The Mole forum. That climate just rots people's brains to
thinking it's nice there. I might have developed a different opinion last year when I visited Houston, but none of you invited me over for dinner.

Houston has great food - going out for dinner is a much better idea
and most of the daytime activity downtown in Houston occurs underground - people use the tunnels to go from place to place and there's lots of stoes and restaurants down there however, it is hot, muggy and definitely lacking in a lot of aspects, though it does have a fairly thriving gay community |

I was down by the arena/convention center and the food was uninspired and over-priced. I did go to an Irish pub in the old town area, which was okay but
nothing special. No one told me about underground stuff, but then again I hate shopping. No such interest in the rainbow warriors, sorry.
I would have loved to go to someone's house for dinner -- I could have scored some tickets to the Rockets game as a thank you (I have a connection). |
