The fukker has scared the crap out of her and this is causing a dependency to avoid that side-effects.

Anyone here do drugs? (Lorazepam and cold turkey?) |

A freind has depression and is taking Lorazepam and wants to quit. She doesn't think she needs it anymore. Her Doc says to expect the worst flu-like
symptoms EVER for three weeks!

I'd prefer Lorazepam and Wild Turkey.

I thought lorazepam was for anxiety, not depression

lorazepam is 'ativan'. Is usually used for anxiety, but we often give it on the night shift to help patients sleep (those in a 4 bedded room). Although
it can be addictive, I'm kinda surprised that someone feels the need to quit it. It's pretty much a downer drug, so unless she's got really wild
anxiety, I'm not sure that it'd be that hard to quit it.

The need to quit it, studentnurse, is to be DRUG-Free! So why does Dr. Doc claim the severe side-effect of quitting? |

why the irrational anxiety over being drug free? IDGI.

Why does she feel compelled to quit cold turkey? Slow weaning is the way to go.

I'm still stuck on the 'why the fuck would somebody take Lorazepam for depression' thing.

Wean off of it slowly.

Lots of anti-depressants are used for anxiety. Maybe both trigger something in the brian the will make sad people happy and anxious people calm...

Your "friend" needs to acquire a couple of fat spliffs and get off the harsh chemicals. Weed might make you cough a bit, but those Lorazepam's
might make you die!

Tell her so go see a naturopath. They will wean her off slowly and prescribe some natural alternatives to ease the transition. Your friend can even stay on the
natural stuff forever if she wishes.
For example, L-Theanine does the same thing as Ativan regarding the GABA receptors in the brain. Calcium and Magnesium mimic the tranquilizers in Ativan. And 5 HTP mimics the happy mood feeling in Ativan. But she must, MUST see a professional regarding switching from drugs to naturals. One should never take naturals and medicine at the same time unless under doctor's watch if the naturals and the drugs have the same action. And even if she doesn't, at the very least, she must see her regular doctor to come off the drugs slowly. She shouldn't do this herself. |

So why does Dr. Doc claim the severe side-effect of quitting? Taking Ativan occasionally is fine. Being "on" it gives you a dependence that will produce discontinuation side effects when coming off it, as do all SSRI/MAOI drugs. Quitting cold turkey would be a mistake. The first time I took Ativan, I woke up the next morning with no memory of the night before. I only tried it once or twice after that. |

If ever a thread was made for me, this is it!!!
I LOVE MY BENZOs (*-*) I'm currently on a steady diet of a bunch of them: lorazepam(Ativan)/oxazepam(sleep or summat)/clonazepam(Klonopin) :c} My psych lets me control dosage, but she'd like to see "progress" (i.e. get off Ativan) but I dunno, I like the 2g dissolvey ones A LOT. People say Klonopin/Valium/Xanax are pretty much the same in terms of strength, but I find they don't do much for me. Snorting or plugging them doesn't make a difference either, so they're just okay I guess. But yeah, wean off them. Doctors make a big deal out of it, but some people lose their fucking minds if they go cold turkey. Not as much with benzos, but with SSRIs for sure. I'm not supposed to talk about this (officially the case is closed), but when I went off Paxil cold turkey, it was pretty fucking epic. I trashed my apartment, slept in the woods and some other fun stuff. This was at university and I must have freaked out some undergrads so campus security called the whitecoats or summat. I don't remember any of it, but it sounds like it was a total lollercaust!!! So yeah, mental illness does have *some* benefits. ETA: AXLE, that is some very interesting info. Good for your average 31337 nuero h4xx0r to know

I'm surprised the Ativan was prescribed on its own, especially for depression. Even more surprised that someone is asking why it would be a kinda sorta
bad idea to get off it via cold turkey.
(and by surprised, I mean I call bullshit on this "story") |
