We never used to do that kind of thing when I was a kid. A 15 year old girl was killed by a car, about 1 block from my house,(about a week ago, so I know it is still very recent) and today when I went by, there were pictures, candles, teddy bears, tons of flowers there. There is another site about 5 blocks from my house where someone was killed about 2 years ago....they still have a cross on a tree, and always flowers and little mementos are left there. I saw 2 others when we drove in to the big city today as well.

Posts: 27723 (06/07/09 4:47 PM) MESS member Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	Several places I've lived let people put up permanent crosses where people died - kinda seems like they shouldn't do it on city property, especially if theat city doesn't allow other types of religious stuff to be displayed There's a bench in the local park in the memory of the two teenage girls who were raped and murdered by a gang there - I remember there was a bit of controversy about whether or not the parents would be allowed to donate it and have it placed there. Quite often there are still flowers or tokens or some remembrances placed there still several years later

Posts: 9052 (06/07/09 4:51 PM) Registered user Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	i am in the deep south and they are all over the place. a guy was drunk 3 years ago and plowed into a tree right at the entrance to my neighborhood and died at the scene. someone keeps putting huge bouquets of fresh slowers there on a regular basis and it's really creepy to drive by them and watch them wilt and wither until the landscaping guys remove them.

There is one a about a block from my fathers house in the middle of a big suburban town. I mean it is one thing if it is the middle of bum fuck nowhere but you don't really need to be setting up your little shrines in front of someones house. Sorry your loved one died. But a cheap carnation cross and a Wal-Mart frame with their photo in it is not going to bring them back.

Gravesites are for memorials. If you get cremated and thrown to the wind, there's no place for flowers.

They're just going to get messed up. Donate toys to a shelter or daycare or something if you have so many to spare. Roadside shrines always scream TRASH to me. Almost as much as the finely crafted and touching memorial that someone had painstakingly carved...into the paint on a bathroom stall in Roses department store in Somerset, Kentucky. They always make me wonder about the logistics of the crash at that point in the roadway. It's not like you can read them, or should even try.
