My 69^th least favorite Buffy episode of all time:

Season 6, episode 21.

After finishing off Warren, Willow turns her attention to killing Jonathan and Andrew, while her former friends try to keep her from doing so.

It's hard to make sense out of the storyline for 'Two to Go': it's placed between 'Villains', in which Willow turns evil, and 'Grave', in which Willow becomes a redhead again. So what's taking place in this episode, you ask? Not much, I answer.

When Willow tore off Warren's skin, we got that she was pretty evil. This episode is supposed to drive the point home, but what does Willow do that's so horrible, besides insulting Dawn and killing the drug dealer? Hell, those two things can be considered as good deeds.

In the end of the episode, we get the 'epic' Buffy vs. Willow showdown, which fell somewhat flat to me. It seemed less a 'former best friends take the baggage out on one another' thing and more of a 'two superheroes in a ring' thing, and even in that aspect it wasn't that exhilarating. Ultimately, we leave the episode pretty much the same way we entered it. I understand the need to make the stakes high instead of making Willow villainy and then immediately bringing her back to the good side, but I just think it could have been done in a more profound way, instead of it feeling like a bit of a filler (and a penultimate episode that is somewhat of a filler is not a good thing).

High point:

Giles making an entrance. One of the best moments ever. He was so needed in this season.

Low point:

The exchange between Willow and Buffy. Super bitch? Let me show you what a slayer really is? It's taken straight from a cheerleader B movie.

Season 3, episode 19

The gang decides to go on the offensive in their fight against the mayor, while each of them struggles to make decisions about their own lives.

This is, in its core, a set-up episode: it sets up the mayor's ascension; it sets up Cordelia's move to LA as a broke mactress-wannabe; it sets up Buffy and Angel's breakup; it sets up season 4, with Willow and Buffy going off to UCS, and Xander going off to his cross-country road-trip. But, naturally for a set-up episode, it doesn't deliver a very compelling storyline - it's too busy setting up things to come. I mean, the climax of the episode was a frigging hunt for rogue spiders.

The stronger moments in 'Choices' include Faith and the Mayor's building relationship, Willow's awesomeness in standing up to Faith, bringing the pages to Giles, etc., and the Mayor's speech - it was pure brilliance that the season's villain was the one to tell Buffy and Angel the inconvenient truth that would lead to their breakup one episode later.

Still, this wasn't enough to make the episode more than just a solid set-up episode. Fortunately, a solid episode in Buffy is a stellar episode compared to other shows, so it's not painful to watch by any means.

High point:

Xander: Go ahead, mock me.

Oz: I think she just did.

Low point:

The scene at the airport with the cheesy music and the over-the-top acting, especially from the vampire who watches with awe as Faith offs the delivery guy. This scene should never have been conceived.


And a riddle: Willow performs a magic trick in "Choices" that she also does in a previous episode, and references in a future episode. Who can name it and the other times it showed up in the series?
