Melodically, his music tends to be monotone. It's like Shaffer isn't even trying. It's got no brains. If a comedy sketch were about fat ladies, Shaffer would have his band members yelling out "fat ladies" 5 times as a part of its hook. I've never seen a divergence from this witless formula. Of course, Shaffer isn't hired to be a fab composer, but it's an indication of the rest of the shitfest that he is. Or give me a link to one genuinely comedic moment Shaffer's ever had on the show. Just one. I could provide a few for Max Weinberg or Andy Richter. I can't do that for Shaffer and would be hardpressed to want to watch anything he's in anyway. He's an old, bald, weasel-like looking man with no wit or humor. Letterman would be much better without him. It's a comedy show. enough said. "Fat ladies" 5 times is a lot funnier then that black guy from Leno doing a guitar riff. Do you not agree? And right off the bat besides Max Weinberg (which it still is debatable) Paul is the most accomplished musician. Maybe not most talented but definitely most accomplished. From SNL to writing songs to musical sidekick...he's got it.

Max needs a script and still comes off as stiff (which is funny) but he can't ad lib for crap. Paul can come back at Letterman with a killer line often. Paul is also a musical genius. Dave can call out the most obscure song and Paul will start playing it. He's like a musical encyclopedia, and can figure out and play what he doesn't know.

I forgot the name of Leno's sidekick already, but he was an idiot. But he was a non-threatening idiot who brought in the black viewers. Who remembers the first black musician sidekick of Leno's? I remember when he got pissed at Leno for a joke and told him to "got to hell!" And he was serious. Didn't last long after that. But some black sidekick too cowtowish would be called an Uncle Tom. And all the black comedians these days are usually in-your-face and get by with dick jokes. So a black guy has to have edge, but be non-threatening, clean, and audience likeable. George Wallace comes to mind. He'd be a great late-night sidekick, but he's probably making too much money in Vegas these days. (Late show at the Flamingo).

I miss the Masturbating Bear, Prepration H Raymond, Pimpbot, that racist singing ghost, the werewolf on drugs, time wasting Frankenstein. I think Triumph is the only character that is most likely to appear on the show but but who knows.
