Before it was co-opted by religious and delusional zealots, the GOP stood for fiscal prudence and a strong national defense. To the rest of the world's polity it was pretty much indistinguishable from the Democratic party. Economic conservativism has been tested by the free market and has failed resoundingly. Thus, it can no longer be considered "based in reality."
Economic conservativism was based on the two principles that you transfer as much wealth as possible from the middle-class to the upper-class and it would be good for everyone (even the middle-class, because you were creating wealth). Well, we saw a massive transfer of wealth from the middle-class to the upper-class and it resulted in a large-scale destruction of wealth. The second principle- that government was the problem and market oversight was completely unnecessary in a free market- proved equally disasterous as the market became swallowed by bad investments and illegal trading practices. |
