I was just watching the finale of Guatemala again and it got me thinking: why spend 13 episodes whittling down contestants to a final 4 or 5, brewing our anticipation with this last-man-standing atmosphere, then whizz-bang within the span of 80 minutes 2-3 of the biggest and most important contestants of the season are voted out before you can even catch your breath and the jury is already getting ready to vote for a winner. Why is it a foregone conclusion that the final episode have 4-5 remaining players? Why not make a 2 hour finale really letting us absorb the final 3 players, and have one final immunity challenge that's really exaggerated in its profound importance... the challenge could even last a whole day or something (you know, something massive like one of those Mole final episode challenges involving trekking across the countryside) and span a few ad breaks. I'm sure you're all shaking your heads at my heretical suggestions, but, I dunno, I just always find the finale a major anti-climax. What do you guys think?

But if I remember correctly, both final episodes and the Reunion show were broadcast all at the same to Australian audiences (I think this may have had something to do with always being a week behind America in airing episodes but had to get up-to-date by the end in order to avoid spoilers from leaking and ruining the show). Is there some particular reason why they changed it to a Final Four (or Five) Finale in later seasons?

We got the episodes on the Wednesday after it was shown in the US. We got the finale on the same day as the US, although it was about 8 hours behind. Mark Burnett thought the S1 finale went by too quickly, so extended S2 to be 42 days and did a final 3.

Basically you just looking at people who's just sitting around waiting for the final RC and IC. Doing no strategy because there's no strategy to do beside waiting for the IC result. So yeah, no.

Is there some law forbidding challenges lasting more than 10 minutes or involving hours of perching still? Oh that's right, everyone's scared of contestants actually having to literally use real survival skills for any sizeable period of time....

Seasons 1, 4, 8, and 10 had the best final ICs because they could potentially go on for hours. And they were all about who wanted it the most. That's the way it should be. I always hope that they'll go back to a "hold on to the idol" type of final IC, but we keep getting these shitty ones instead. They're so brief and anticlimactic.

That just eats strategy and discussion and replaces it with challenge footage.

Epic challenge would be great for the opening challenge of the season ala Guatemala trek that lasted more than a day. If you're having an epic challenge in the end, it would feel anticlimatic because it's basically wasting time that can be used for strategy footage/camp footage and changing it with some trekking challenge (I mean how many people complained that Survivor nowadays is only filled with challenge footage instead of camp footage? An now you want to use half the episode just for the challenge). I think endurance is more worth it because in the end it's about who wants it more. Plus having a trek challenge would give an advantage to certain people aka people with more stamina like JT or Tyson and basically Erinn wouldn't have a chance to win it. Plus having a trek challenge isn't great in their own because they couldn't control the camera angle more freely (like using a crane and tripod) like if they do a contained challenge. If you want to see the failure of doing an epic challenge in Survivor, you can see "Pirate Master" a Mark Burnett reality show too. It was an epic failure.

"Survivor" is better sometimes with simplicity. That's why I like the whole "stand on a pole" challenges even more than the whole juggling bit they did this past season...or the house-building for that matter.

I don't know why they break away from endurance challenge and concentrate more in concentration challenge. I mean with the final challenge in China and Micronesia, at least they're still part endurance and part concentration but in Gabon and Tocantins, they were both pure concentration challenge. Maybe it's to give chances more to women? I don't know but I'm hoping next season they do endurance challenge, though I doubt it.

I mean, a woman won the Final IC in Guatemala, EI, China, Micronesia (though that doesn't really matter much since only women were left), and Gabon.

In EI, the challenge was rigged for women, It would be hard for people with more body mass to hold onto that blocks. I mean if Cirie was on that challenge, she would have fallen immediately.

True, they are really epic, and if I were playing Survivor I'd much rather have to perch for 12 hours than juggle balls or balance a marble, but it becomes a big pain in the ass for the camera men, drivers, producers, and Jiffy Pop himself. Palau's F3 IC was the longest challenge ever, and I guess production didn't expect it to go on that long. Before Ian made the deal with Tom, Katie was sleeping on the dock, Jeff was trying not to nod off, the cameramen had been at it for hours and hours on end, and another camera crew and production team was making the jury wait in limbo for a Tribal Council that they were supposed to have shot (it was day/night 38). When Ian made the deal to go out at 3rd place, I think production was just like "fuck it, let's go to sleep," so they didn't go to TC. Which makes me wonder if production didn't interfere with Ian's choice to step down. In theory, let's say the two of them really did battle it out until someone fell off. What if that had gone on until the morning of day 39? It would be light out, and you can't film a TC during the daytime. From a logistical standpoint, it might have been better for the production team to make something happen so that the F3TC didn't look weird in the daylight (maybe you can see all the wires and stuff in the daylight). I'm not saying it's impossible to do, I just can't imagine production would want to do that. Maybe this was discussed way back when, but I wonder if production didn't step in and make something happen like they did with Janu. Anyone else know about this?

That's why after Palau whenever they do endurance challenge, it's going to be painful or there's a time limit. No more standing on the perch, and Probst having to persuade them to go down with food (though that happened in Micronesia, but that's a recycled challenge)
