Big Brother 1, known at the time as Big Brother 2000 (much like the international versions, who do not use numbers to classify each season, but the year they were broadcast), was the debut season of the American version of the international reality show Big Brother. It was the first series to be broadcast in English, premiering only days before the British version (however in the British version, the housemates had gone into the house 5 days prior to the start of Big Brother in the US). Seventy episodes aired from July 5 to September 29, 2000. Julie Chen, a host of CBS This Morning and The Early Show, was named the host.

Interestingly, although the success of Survivor: Borneo in the summer of 2000 is generally seen as the forerunner to the reality show trend which followed, Big Brother was the only other major network reality show to be airing at that same time.

1. The format. As people who have watched other versions such as the UK one know, the format of Big Brother involves houseguests nominating two people, and the two or more people with the most nominations go up on the block, where the viewing public decides who goes home. It works well with the other editions, but here? Not so much. You see, the public had a habit of voting out the most controversial houseguests, leaving a bunch of bores in the house. There's a reason this format only lasted one season over here! However, I don't think the format was really the problem with this show. For that, I blame...
2. The cast. They chose ten normal people, including a guy with one leg, to be this season's cast, and it's this cast that is the big reason this season bombed so hard. They were fucking boring. Sure, we had Will-Mega, who stirred shit for the hell of it, and Jordan, who actually bashed the show after leaving, but then we were left with some of the dullest people in reality TV history. This cast actively avoided conflict, something you'd never want in a reality show. This, not the format, was the reason the show sucked.
3. The schedule. Today, Big Brother airs three hour-long blocks a week, but the first season did six episodes a week, four being half-hour blocks, a one-hour recap, and the one-hour eviction show. I think that would be exhausting even to your seasoned BB watchers, but it didn't help that the show was so fucking boring. So CBS had this boring show nobody was watching on pretty much every night for over two months. Good thing they had Survivor.
4. The theme song. It's kinda cheesy, but it's tolerable. That is, until the houseguests are tasked with making lyrics to it. This results in one of the most uncomfortable TV viewing experiences I've ever had, and now you, too, can share the pain I've had to endure watching it!
   
5. The banner planes. They've showed up off and on in later seasons, but they were most notable on this season. Banner planes would fly over the house and leak stuff to the houseguests like "Brittaney used all the toothpaste!" and "Jamie's ego is bigger than her fat face!" Well, nothing that exciting since these people were fucking boring, but between that and the lunatics who screamed at them outside, these people weren't as isolated from the outside world as the producers thought they'd be. Still isolated enough to not realize how much their show sucked, though.
6. The "walkout". On Day 68, Chicken George tries to talk his fellow competitors to walk out. He thinks the show wouldn't have worked without them, and that they'd all win by walking out, enjoying the fame that they thought they'd get from being on Big Brother. Of course, nobody gave a shit about Big Brother and the producers were probably hoping they'd all leave so they could put in some interesting people on this show. Eddie was the sole voice of reason, deciding to stay, and the walkout ends up not happening. Still, you can experience George's delusions again if you want to watch the sole interesting moment of this show.
7. Chicken George. George ended up being the break-out star of this season, if a season as boring as Big Brother 1 could have a break-out star. The guy started off normal, working with the chickens they had to get his nickname, but soon he turned batshit insane, coloring his hair green and pretending to be an astronaut in the bath tub. He also tried to form the walkout mentioned above and had an insanely loyal following of idiots from his home town that rallied behind him to vote off such threats as the punk virgin chick. He ended up getting 5th place and ended up becoming the only BB1 contestant to remain relevant after his season ended by getting on All-Stars, but more on that later.
8. Jamie the Beauty Queen. She wanted to keep her beauty queen title a secret, probably because everyone would point and laugh at her for making up such an obvious lie. Of all the people there delusional about their fame, she was the most delusional of them all, thinking she'd get a gig as an actress or some bullshit. She got to help Chen host and shit, but her big break was when she got to decide whether to talk to her mom or a casting director. Jamie, in all her infinite wisdom, decided to go with the casting director, which obviously was the right choice considering her extensive movie and TV career.
9. Eddie the One-Legged Fucker. Of all the contestants there, Eddie was the only one with any common sense in that entire house. He and Will-Mega fought a bit, and Eddie overall was pretty rough around the edges, but he was the only person there smart enough to realize that this show wouldn't make them famous, and he was the main person against the walk-out. He ended up winning the entire show, mainly because he had one leg, but he's still my favorite person of that season and really the only person there who knew what the fuck he was doing. I would've liked to see him on All-Stars, because I think he could've hung with some of the strategic minds there.
10. The live shows. Even in the first season, Julie Chen hosted, but she had an army of cronies to help her, like Dr. Drew as resident psychologist to determine why these idiots are so boring, and Regina the AOL bitch who'd talk about how AOL members found them boring. Chen would interview people like George's idiot fanbase or whoever, and the live audience would just sit there and wait until they're told to clap. It was as big a trainwreck as the actual show.
    

The Amazing Race 8 (also known as The Amazing Race: Family Edition) was the eighth installment of the reality television show, The Amazing Race. The Amazing Race 8 differed from previous installments of The Amazing Race in that instead of pairs of adults with a pre-existing relationship, this race featured families of four and allowed the participation of minors as young as 8. The Race returned to the original teams of two adults for The Amazing Race 9. In addition to also having easier challenges, the Race also placed less emphasis on international travel as numerous legs were contained within the continental United States, and all race locations were inside North America. Filming ran from July 7, 2005 to July 31, 2005. The show premiered on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 and concluded on December 13, 2005.

1. A race around the world United States. In addition to the cast, one of the large differences between the Family Edition and other seasons was the race path. Usually, racing teams circumnavigate the globe, completely going around the world (or at least going far before making a U-turn and then go backwards a la TAR7), but due to the larger teams and younger contestants, we were stuck watching teams travel around the US. Part of the appeal of TAR is watching teams deal with cultural differences, and that aspect was missing from this season. Still, since we only get to see the US in the first and last legs of each regular season, it's still interesting to see all the interesting areas of the US we'd never see otherwise, right?
2. A route even tourists would avoid. Too bad the race route sucked. There's a lot of interesting areas they could've gone, but screw that, let's go to some random areas nobody gives a shit about! The entire race ended up dull to watch because the locales just sucked. Another reason to watch TAR is to get to see all the interesting places the teams get to go, and that too was missing this season even though the US has plenty of notable places to visit. It's like the race planners didn't fucking care, and there are a couple of things in particular that I have a beef with.
3. The worst roadblock ever. In Leg 3, teams were bunched up into two buses of four teams each. Once they arrived, they got their clue and had to choose numbers for a Roadblock, where the participants just rode around in a centrifuge for a few minutes until they got their clue, where they walked to the pit stop. The problem is that you had to wait your turn to ride the centrifuge, and you rode for a set time which you could not control, so essentially there was no fucking way the team that picked the last number could avoid getting last. That is without a doubt one of the worst-planned roadblocks in the history of this show, and it still pisses me off that who got eliminated was determined by which of four bunched teams got the last number. This roadblock alone is a big reason I hate this season, as it shows the planners just didn't fucking care. Pathetic.
4. The worst leg ever. However, the shittiness does not stop there! Let's go to Leg 4, where the teams first had to go to... The World's Largest Office Chair! Jesus fucking Christ. They then went to Talladega, which isn't so bad besides the fact that one team lost their husband in a racing accident (more on them later) and the fact that they had to ride around the race track on a party bike, but then they went to a god damn trailer park. I'm not kidding. One of the teams got lost because they didn't think this show would be pathetic enough to go to a fucking trailer park. But wait, that's still not all! In what is probably the cumulation of shitty race planning and product placement, their next task was... A FUCKING GAS STATION. Yes, a fucking gas station. Let me repeat that, their next destination was some run-of-the-mill BP gas station. Then they go to New Orleans where the teams either cut a log or played Blackjack. I fucking dare anyone to find a worse leg in the history of this show, because the uncreativity and pure apathy displayed in planning this leg pretty much represents the care and attention put into this entire fucking season. Complete fucking bullshit.
5. The Weavers. Now that I've told you how fucking pissed off I am about how the race was set up, let's go to the teams, first of all being this season's trainwreck team, the Weavers. The Weavers were your god-fearing good-moral team with a tragic story, as the husband and father died tragically while cleaning a race track during a practice run or something like that. The Weavers consisted of the batshit insane mother Linda, batshit insane daughters Rebecca and Rachel, and the sole sane member 14-year-old Rolly. The women were pretty crazy, and because of that the other teams pretty much hated them, causing them to get Yielded twice. They also had to deal with two tasks that unnerved Linda at least since they reminded her of her deceased husband. They were crazy, but they did make it through some tough shit too to get third, so that's something. Probably their most memorable moment was the first leg, where they were pulling a buggy and it went out of control and ran some of them over.
6. The Paolos. Definitely a Sucks favorite, the Paolos probably had the most in-fighting of any team of the race, or rather, mother Marion and son DJ did. They bickered constantly, and the way they did it was pretty damn amusing, but this team also enjoyed the experience and had some memorable quotes, like Mama Paolo's "I want to go to New Zealand!" I wish I remembered more awesome stories involving them, but the fact that Mama Paolo's essentialy the mascot of Sucks' TAR board shows just how amazing this team was.
7. The Gaghans. Few teams come around that divide Sucks as much as the Gaghans. Some Sucksters were dreading having to deal with young kids on TV, and the Gaghans in a way represented what many fans dreaded from this season, as they are the father/mother/young son/young daughter team that many expected and dreaded. As it turns out, they were actually a pretty strong team, and the kids Billy and Carissa were awesome, not complaining but just kicking ass. There was a lot of hate on Sucks, me included, but they ended up being one of the better teams on this season, so kudos to them. Plus, Tammy Gaghan is the only TAR contestant who still posts regularly on Sucks. Hey, Tammy!
8. Kevin and Drew's cameo. One of the first tasks of the season had the teams go to a hot dog cart to pick up a clue, which had none other than season 1's Kevin and Drew. Out of ten people picking up a clue, only Brian Paolo recognized them. Sad.
9. Bransens VS Linzes. The entire season ended up being between the Bransens, which had a father and three daughters in their 20's, and the Linzes, three brothers and a sister in their 20's. After the initial legs, both ended up dominating the season, and with little surprise they made the F3, where the Linzes ended up on top. Hey, at least the Bransens won gasoline for life.
10. The final task. One good thing about this season was that it started the idea of having a final task right before the finish line, in this case putting together a jigsaw puzzle of North America. It was decent, but it lead to such wonderful final challenges as TAR9's flags or TAR14's surfboards. I think it's still debated whether the Weavers actually completed their puzzle.

When we were arguing about this yesterday in the TAR survey thread, Tammy revealed that the only reason this happened is because of Hurricane Dennis, otherwise that part of the leg would have been much longer and more involved.
