I owned a retail store that was surviving, and may have made it if I had put a few more years into it, but while I owned it I noticed that there was a
distributor of some of my stuff who sucked at getting his work done on time. So I called the producers of his products and told them I could do a better job.
(Sorry if I am being vague, but if I get specific I might as well post my name and address). That was 17 years ago, and it has been a great gig. So I was 30
then.

Not sure if most of us ever obtain that dream job - I have a job that I'm very comfortable with and it just developed over time into what it is now. And
I've survived another closing down of a group that I work with to be transferred to another group. And I'm now having accelerated language lessons.

I didn't fall into it. I started at the lowest rung and worked my ass off for the last 12 years.

Got sick of working for the man (and waking up in the morning), so I started my own business. Developed a business plan and used government programs that
provided grants and low interest loans for entrepreneurs. Figured my tax dollars pay for these programs, so I might as well get some of that money back. I was
33.

i've had 2 dream jobs so far.
the first one, a friend brought me over from our previous workplace. there ended up being 5 of us who migrated. we had a great time, did good work, got all the responsibility we could want, and gained all sorts of experience, amazing co-workers, international travel. good times. ended due to bad money management at the top. the second one, i went in at the lowest level making horrible money, but worked my way up really fast. small, niche business that i just happened to love and be good at. that ended in this economic downturn. now i'm at what could be my third dream job. i got in through a friend. it's for a startup, so it's as iffy as it gets. but i'm one of only 2 working with the principals, so we're in a place to make our jobs whatever we want. if the company survives, it'll be a dream job. if it doesn't, on to the next thing.... |

Best friend from college's mom hooked me up. I was 24. It's all about who you know.

Surgically precise goal by objective. Took about six years. |

Are you saying you could have started the business without the help, Vic?
I've had two dream jobs. First through a friend, the second through college + working my tail off. I've had a couple enjoyable jobs beyond that. I think I've only ever had one or two jobs that blew chunks. |

I could have. I was going to and was well into the process. A friend told me about a program that would give you a fixed grant. They in turn told me about low
interest entrepreneur loans. I was approved for both. The loan is paid off. The grant is more than paid back by the employment of people and their tax dollars
as well as mine.
It's actually the kind of program that is pro-business/jobs. It encourages entrepreneurship/business/job creation. Most Canadian programs are wasteful and keep people in poverty. |

Dream job: I entered a contest to be a guest DJ for a night on the local radio station and won. Station Owner heard me and offered me a job. Worked there three
years, ended up doing afternoon drive and was the PD until he sold the station and it went automated.
Current job: Situationally it's the best job I've had and I'm quite sure I'll be here for the duration. Right now am getting my professional desginations, just won a pretty impressive award only given out to 40 people in the whole Zone (Michigan, Indiana and Illinois combined) and the stability is pretty impressive in this economy. I just worked my ass off working for an agent for 7 yrs and made a good name with the people on the operations end , so when it was time for me to transition to "corporate" I had a good reputation and they were happy to hire me. |

Like I said, these programs are there. Any good businessman will use any advantage or loophole that the government will give them to MAKE MORE MONEY. Plus
these programs exist because of the money paid by taxpayers. It would be silly not to use them. If it didn't exist it wouldn't have stopped me. I just
would have paid more interest to the bank.

So you approve of government help that actually helps?
I wonder what kind of political position operates under that assumption? hmmm.... let me think... ;) |

I didn't start the program. I used it to better position myself for success. That's just smart. And I'd encourage anyone trying to start a business
to do the same thing. Research everything to make sure you are successful.
