The judges TRIED to get rid of Diana, but were unsuccessful because her voice was too good and the competition was too weak. They finally succeeded in the finale, where they pushed Mantasia as much as they could (though Simon still criticized her second song, which was hideously bad even by Mantasia's low standards). I am the first to admit that Diana's pageanty, cloying, fake-seeming personality pisses off a lot of people. But as far as I can tell, it's NOT fake. She really is a perky, friendly person. And I still don't see how the mediocre, forgettable "I'm Still Standing" is a crime against humanity or some such nonsense. Idol sees worse performances than that all the time (especially this season) and I've already listed four I thought were much worse from THE SAME WEEK.

So was season 3 really the year black females were better? No, that was season 6. I think Jordin, Melinda, Lakisha and Stephanie were the 4 best singers that year, regardless of race or gender. I think season 3 had just 5 singers in the top 12 who fully deserved to be there, 3 of whom were black: Jennifer, Latoya, George, Diana and Amy. So not counting promising semifinalists like Suzy Vulaca, it had two very deserving black females, plus one who should have been sent home by the anonymous screeners.

As Simon says in his book, "A Moment Like This" was commissioned with the idea that Kelly and Tamyra would square off in the finale. This stuck Justin's fairly rangeless middle-high tenor with a song intended for a soprano. But he was sure to lose anyway. The contestant who got even more totally screwed by the finale song was Blake, probably for the same reason. "This Is My Now" was in too high a key for Blake and emphasized everything he couldn't do, like holding notes. They probably picked the song figuring some combo of Melinda, Jordin and LaKisha would be battling it out. We never did find out what Jordin's victory margin was, so we don't know how crucial the song was in her victory. But since I couldn't stand Blake, I was happy with the result.
