So (forgetting for now about Mantasia's own very long list of DIS-credits), what WAS the worst performance ever by somebody making the final two? It's a good question, and I'll go through my own personal list of worsts (admittedly, I am forgetting a few). Diana we already discussed to death. I thought Kelly, Ruben, and Bo were NEVER bad, so I'll forget about including them. Justin's PYT was bad, but it wasn't awful. I thought Clay's Grease, famously hated by Simon, was also just run of the mill bad. Carrie's Piece of my Heart, while her only bad performance, wasn't awful. Ditto with Taylor's worst, "Take me home, country roads." I thought Jordin gave 3 bad performances: semis week 2 when she was almost voted off, the No Doubt song, and one other I can't remember at all now. None were truly horrible, though. Blake and Archie, neither of whom I cared for, had a TON of bad ones. Blake I've mostly tried to blot out of my mind (I only liked him occasionally) but Archie's worst has to be either We Can Work It Out on top 12 night (he forgot the lyrics) or the hideous newer song he butchered in the middle part of top 3 night. Cook had a bad streak in the middle of the season; the one he did on top 8 night by holding out his hand (which had something scribbled on it) stands out as the worst to me.

Thanks for this. I think I agree with most of what you said about what were everybody's worst performances. Jordin and Archie were definitely terrible, but they didn't make my skin crawl the way Diana's performance did. Diana made me want to hit her in the face with a shovel. Clearly that is just MY reaction, but it was a strong one...

I've left out one contestant, because I think she, and not Diana, had the worst performance by anybody in the finale that I liked at all (i.e. excluding Mantasia and Blake). It's Katherine McPhee's tuneless screech of a Christina Aguilara song (title mercifully forgotten) which rightly put her into the bottom 2 on season 5's disasterous top 10 night. She was wearing a silly combination lesbian/equestrian outfit, if that helps jog anybody's memory. I loved Katherine a lot of the time, but that night she was truly awful.

LOL! I have to admit that I have very few specific memories of Season 5. All I know is that I was pissed off from beginning to end over the overpraise of singers I couldn't stand and the absolute travesty of the fact that Bucky was never given his due... That season started off well, getting rid of my least favorites (Melissa, Chicken Little, Lisa Tucker, Mandisa), but lo and behold, by the time they were all gone, I'd come to hate most of the others (Taylor, Elliott, Daughtry, even Kathryn whom I originally liked) every bit as much. I was "meh" on Pickler and Ace as people, but I thought they both sucked. Paris was talented, but SOOO not ready. Bucky was the only redeeming thing about that whole season for me.

I don't hate everyone. Every year, there have been at least a few that I've liked. It's just sad when everybody I like is gone before we're even halfway through the finals. It's even worse when it was totally clear from the beginning that they had no hope of making it any further, and I should be happy they lasted as long as 8th place...

Preferring the black singers in Season 3 (even Blah-Toya, as stultifyingly dull as she may have been) is not racist - it just makes sense. The black people (I'm including George) were talented. The others, not so much...

You're right. She had some very good vocals and had (I assume still has) a fantastic voice. Her glossy insincerity kept me from ever thinking she was a particularly good performer, but I agree she's got a lot of raw talent.

I will admit at the time I liked Diana I was 13/14 years old so the personality issues she may have had being young didn't really phase me.

I wouldn't have faulted Diana for feeling too young. It was actually just the opposite. She was so polished and slick that there was no youthfulness to her AT ALL. That was the problem.
