I read that guy's review.. and hated it. I think he almost totally missed the whole concept of the show. It's about the Glee club.. not the individual members.

He wants everything spelled out in perfect sequence leaving nothing for the watcher to think about. In my high school, everyone auditioned for the special ensemble every year, granted, once you were in, you were most likely to be in again, but you still had to audition. (Same thing for my (adult) men's chorus). As a new director, I am not surprised he would re-audition everyone anyway. A good new director doesn't just take legacy members without hearing them first.

As pointed out, there were no other names for auditions, so having bad auditions wasn't part of the pilot. Also, he's wrong with his claim that "EVERYONE" loves to watch bad singers audition.. *I* don't. I don't watch American Idol for just that reason.

He wonders if there is a social heirarchy anywhere outside of Texes.. umm.. yeah.. Sports always have the popular kids (and cheerleading is a sport.) Plus, in this school, the cheer squad is famous, of course it will be popular. In high school, if it's not popular, it doesn't last long.. hence getting popular kids with talent involved will bring more people to see the performances as well as join the club.

He wonders if football players are actually that vicious? IT'S A TV SHOW... you have to exaggerate some things to make them more interesting to the audience. I mean is every hospital full of sex crazed humping interns like Grey's Anatomy?

His main problem is he wants EVERYTHING in the pilot. He wants bios on each kid, he wants more conflict, he wants too much for 45 minutes. Why was the first season of LOST so good? Because you discovered new things as the season went on. There will be time for the kids to interact more. The pilot centered around getting the club going.. and it did just that. The conflicts have been set up for future shows: Director/Wife, Director/Wife/Female Teacher, Director/Cheerleading Coach, Kids/Kids, Star Male/Football team, Lead Female/Everyone in school who hates her, Principle/Club Existence, GleeClub/Winning Nationals. as well as other sub-plots.

He also seems to be basing the whole series on just the pilot. Who says the "sassy black chick" will always be in the background because she's fat? The "kid in the wheelchair" already got a star spot because he can jam on the guitar. By the way, Myspace is still very popular.

If you are going to end with the glee club teacher braving his wife's displeasure (!) to coach glee club after all, then you'd think the story would be something like this: previous glee club teacher is fired for feeling up a student. Principal says "we're going to have to shut down glee club unless we can find someone qualified to coach it." Hero teacher says, "I can't afford to do this permanently but I'll do it until someone qualified comes along." And then he comes to love the kids and when they finally say, "we can't find anyone permanent, we're going to shut it down" he finally decides to do it.

While he's fixing the story, he should hire Whoopie Goldberg to be the director and get a bunch of nuns as the teachers.
