I have a short term emergency (gotta go help a family member in trouble) and need to buy a no contract phone that I can tether to my computer to access the Internet. I don't care about cameras, ring tones or anything else, I just need rural access to my computer through a cellphone connect. I don't even need to dial out for anything else.

I really only need this for a few weeks, so I don't want to get a long term contract. I have a prepaid Virgin Mobile cell service now but their 1-800 customer service claims none of their phones can be tethered to a laptop.

PLEASE HELP - I need to buy something and hit the road TODAY. Thanks...

Where are you going that there won't be regular internet access? And why do you need the internet during a family emergency? And why don't you get a job so you can afford a real phone?

Get something compatible with PDANet - I don't think the providers can tell if you're tethered or just surfing on the phone that way. Might be WinMo only...
