odd thing it that all the shipping companies involved say it's still cheaper to pay a ransom than to go around the long way - I guess they think it's
like paying a toll on the local toll roads

Isn't sailing all around Africa the long way? Doesn't seem like a short cut to me.

I think they're getting nailed after going through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea.

Oh OK, call me geographically challenged. My husband called me out yesterday because I thought Detroit was further west than Chicago.

Yeah yeah. You know how it is on the east coast. All the flyover states blur into one big blob.

You just need to know what time zone everything is in. Detroit EST, Chicago CST, Denver MST

The quotes from that article are hilarious. The interviewed pirates (who interviewed the pirates?) are acting like it's some big breach of etiquette that the guys threatening to gun someone down were gunned down. Uh...all right then. The code is more what you'd call "guidelines" than actual rules. |

This was like breaching etiquette and going right for the Triple Dog Dare.

The French Navy's reputation has never been sullied like the rest of their military forces.
It's just that they fought for the Nazi's in WWII. |

Now thousands of Dolphins are blocking the Pirates .
Pretty kewl . BEIJING -- Thousands of dolphins blocked the suspected Somali pirate ships when they were trying to attack Chinese merchant ships passing the Gulf of Aden, the China Radio International reported on Monday. The Chinese merchant ships escorted by a China's fleet sailed on the Gulf of Aden when they met some suspected pirate ships. Thousands of dolphins suddenly leaped out of water between pirates and merchants when the pirate ships headed for the China's. The suspected pirates ships stopped and then turned away.
The pirates could only lament their littleness before the vast number of dolphins. The spectacular scene continued for a while.

The part I don't get is how the pirates in their little motorboats can "capture" a huge merchant ship.
The US cruise ship got everybody off the decks and outran the pirates. I understand that the merchant ships don't have the power to outrun them, but how do the pirates get onboard? I can see that an oil tanker has a thin hull that could be penetrated by bullets, so maybe it has to stop. Can a huge merchant ship be sunk by small arms fire? |
