Or if he didn't hire them, these are "others" who happened to be on the outside world in 2008 that he called in. But he knows a war is coming and he wants reinforcements. - If Ben hired her, she'd also know everything about the guy who Sayid killed. Did we ever really know how Widmore knew Sayid was killing for Ben? - We don't know who all Ilana's people are. I believe that Cesar was not one of them. He just assumed a position of power and aligned himself with Ilana. - Ben blows away Cesar, allowing himself time to get to the main island...and eliminating Ilana's main power threat. And just how did Ben know Cesar had that shotgun anyway? - It is quite convenient that Ilana's people just happen to find the shipment of guns after Ben leaves for the main island. Then when Lapidus returns, his treatment by Ilana was pretty reminiscent to me of how the Others treated the 815ers in earlier seasons. - The question she asked of Lapidus could have been prompted by Ben. ie ask this if someone comes back before me.

Smokey looks like lightning and Abe Vigoda all wrapped up into one. But interestingly it doesn't really look like smoke. That's assuming Anubis is kneeling before Smokey and not some other deity.

I came across this story... The story is that the Sphinx was nearly buried in sand and a man slept in the shadow of his head and had a dream that the sphinx told him that he was dying from the sand suffocating him, and that if he unburied him (the Sphinx) from the sand, he would become pharoah over Egypt. So he saved the sphinx - a giant statue - by digging it out of the sand and eventually killed his own brother, the pharoah, and became pharoah himself. Interesting that the Sphinx told the dude that he'd become pharoah but didn't tell him he'd have to kill his brother to do it. I think this is totally reminiscent of the Locke v. Ben struggle. Or maybe Ben v. Charles?

And since he's the Egyptian god of the dead and Smokey has the power of judgement of life or death depending on your actions - well, I think it's quite telling. What's weird is how Dharma got some sort of sway/control over an obviously ancient creature/deity. Could Jacob be Anubis incarnate...sort of, anyway? eta: Smokey may have looked different before Dharma got their hands on it. Smoke would be hard to carve into stone, as well. His white tennis shoes stayed pretty white after lurking all over that island. I thought it funny that they emphasized Locke taking off Christian's shoes before getting in the outrigger then putting back on socks & shoes at the dock. We've never known Locke to be that fastidious before.

At this time, I don't think it's Charles or Ben. She could have been sent there by the Dharma Initiative to "reclaim" the island. She's there to look for someone too, and that person is the one who can answer her question. I think that person is Miles (Dr. Chang's son). It is also no coincidence that Miles and Dr. Chang figured prominently in next week's episode. Didn't Dharma send food by parachute to the island as recent as 2004 (few weeks after Oceanic crashed)? This means that the Dharma Initiative is still alive.
