This is where I disagree with most people... and Danny AND Brandon lovers almost always talk about physical prowess... I love dance for so much more than
skillful moves. Passion is what interests me most, and storytelling. My friend who is a senior citizen, though I argue the point with her, is not far off. She
always says, in regards to Brandon especially, "That is not dancing so much. It is more gymnastics."

To me, the visceral reaction watching Danny or Brandon elicits a tremendous emotional response. I truly don't think that Danny or Brandon dances like a
robot -- I can see their passion and storytelling. But I don't watch he dances solely for esoteric qualities -- when something hits me in the face, like a
spectacular lift, it hits me harder emotionally than something someone did artistically with their fingertips.

I agree that most people equate physical prowess & power with a good dnacer. I am not that way at all. When I talk powerful with Danny, I am talking
emotional power. For me his movements are magical and I am drawn to it. I think Danny is not "power dancer." He may not be in your face emotional at
times, but it is emotional none the less. He is passionate & you can feel it in the way he moves to the music.
What bugged me that year was how they said he was arrogant and full of himself and felt as though he had already won the competition. I don't think that's what it was. I know a lot of Ballet dancers and that is the way they all are. Danny has had ballet training so I think the way he carried himeself was often because that's just how ballerina's are. NOt all ballerinas, most. I don't think it is nessacerily right but that's how it is. We can agree to disagree on this point. I may have put the physical prowess in the previous comment, but I don't think of Danny as a physical dancer like I do Brandon. Danny has loads of passion. I think he has more passion than any of the dancers that have graced the SYTYCD stage. Remember, it's just my opinion. |

I agree with Hanson. Danny just had "it." And he danced tall. Brandon doesn't dance tall...

Of course it is your opinion tallulah! And it is good that you have it. I see it a different way, but it is all good. Now if somebody starts telling me Ton
deserves to be there, I might throw a tizzy.

PAPAYOKE wrote:Well I personally thought the two best dancers from S2 were Allison and Heidi. Both of them were given some of that year's most challenging routines and pulled them each off flawlessly - even if their partners were less then stellar and brought them down. Travis struggled in ballroom and while Natalie was good, she never really stood out in any routine. So really, Allison and Heidi should have been the last two dancers standing in the comeptition, but they were booted off way too early. |

Heidi was good, but I thought she lacked precision a lot of times. I don't even remember Allison.

Allison was my favorite from S2. I was a bit crushed when she was voted off. Awesome dancer and cute as hell.

cginspace wrote: I agree with you in theory, and I was also left cold by Danny. Brandon, however, seems to have the potential to move me (although it's a bit early to say). One thing I love about what I've seen of Brandon so far is that although his body looks very solid and heavy, he dances weightlessly. I loved how Travis (or even more so, Nick Lazzarini) could defy gravity sometimes in their routines. I bet Brandon can do that. |

I'll keep a look out, but I don't know if I have the eye to spot that...

He could dance taller, though. I actually agree with DP on that one.
I actually think the best male dancer this year could be Jason, but he needs to learn to be more in sync with his partner. I am rooting most for Melissa. Naughty Old Broad FTW! |

For another, his facial expressions during his solos clearly show his intensity, and it's unfair to dock him for being charming since all we've seen so far are the foxtrot and disco, both dances where smiling is de riguer. Besides, when I watch someone like Danny or Brandon dance, they could have their tongue hanging out and their eyes rolled up in the back of their heads for all I care.

Hanson wrote: I think I get what cg is saying, but more when Brandon ISN'T dancing... His pimping for votes and the faces he pulls while being critiqued and while Kat is giving out the numbers are perhaps the most annoying of any dancer this season. I try not to look at the dancers then (or at least not hold it against them), because it has nothing to do with their dancing... |

aunttallulah wrote: Interesting point... Classical ballet calls for the face to be somewhat expressionless, while the movement of the body conveys the emotion and the story. I guess if people love that style, Danny WOULD be a great favorite. Although I can appreciate this style in the context of a ballet (where the story provides a framework that the dancers then fill out over the course of an evening), I don't think it works as well in the setting of a competition like this. We have so little time to connect with the dancers and to what they are conveying, that an expressive face really helps move things along... |

Let me explain the best I can. Of course, as has been noted, this is all preference; but I find the smile on Brandon looks like a mask to me, completely
plastered on. In the Foxtrot, for example, Janette had "thrill" on her face, a big smile that actually gave a sense of emotion that is totally right
for Foxtrot. Brandon's just seemed totally fabricated, stuck there not knowing what its purpose was. That said, one of the reasons I generally like
Ballroom less than other forms of dance is that the emotions tend to be overdone in general; but in this case I think Janetter did it in an exuberant way while
Brandon's reminded me of a child posing for a camera: Smile!
