And WTF - Kate the tomboy/expert tracker/army brat/hard to catch fugitive doesn't know how to work a winch? Why does Ben have to lose his memory? He's devious enough that he could have recognized all of the people who came back years later and just decided to stay quiet. It's not like he's a blabbermouth about important facts. No way Sayid misses an easy kill. Or doesn't make sure. Claire's mom could be a terrible person for all Kate knows. On the other hand, Claire's mom just accepts that this kid who's been foisted on her is her grandchild? On the third hand - who leaves a kid with someone who they never met without at least introducing them? Oceanic sure doesn't pay for decent hotel accomodation when they bring someone over to cut a cheque. In fact, why does someone need to come to the US to collect and sign releases anyway? But a good episode nonetheless.

Reading it this way, it could just be that Ben will no longer be an innocent in terms of being unaware of all the big picture stuff that the Others know. May not have to mean some kind of actual violaton. And, Cindi shut up.

Posts: 1953 (04/02/09 1:26 PM) Registered user Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	Ok, I understand the whole "linear time" concept and that the 1970's Losties are no longer seeing time as linear, but rather in a fragmented fashion (birth->2004-1974-1975-1976-1977). My point is, what happens if the Losties do NOT jump forward? If Jack was born in 1970, wouldn't there now be TWO "jacks"? Is it really possible for someone to exist in two seperate places at the same time? Is that not some sort of paradox? Granted, the two Jacks would be different ages and would have different experiences. But there WOULD be two Jacks. What would happen if the two Jacks (or any of the others) were to meet themselves? Insanity? The "Back to the Future-disappearnce"? Inquiring minds wanna know!

In fact, I assume he returns fairly quickly because otherwise there's all kinds of questions at Dharma about where he was, how he was healed, etc. Or he does remember them (maybe not being shot) and just keeps mum years later. Theory - maybe he organized them coming back because he knew they all had to be there to make him into what he becomes (Sayid has to shoot him, Jack has to refuse to operate, Kate and Sawyer have to take him to the others (dunno about Hurley or Sun, especially since she's not with the rest).

She was not brought in as a Dharma recruit, so they could have used a story that she was a medic, or a doctor, or a nurse, on the ship that supposedly crashed. Maybe they put her in the motor pool because they had nothing else at the time?

There ARE two Jacks in 1977. One is a kid growing up in Christian's house somewhere (and getting into fights as I recall). One is a janitor on an island. And if they ever met, there wouldn't be a disappearance or an explosion or anything. They'd just meet. Just like there were two sawyers when Claire was delivering a baby. One was spying on her from behind a bush and the other was off on the beach somewhere.

Will we ever find out what happened to Rose and Bernard? Hahaha, why am I wondering why my questions haven't been answered yet? It's fucking Lost. If I had them answered I'd just end up with more questions. Guess I'll just ride it out like I have been. I think that all the 70s Losties will die in the island (some heroically) because they know that sometime in the future, they will be born again. The last scene could be our cast taking that Oceanic Flight once again.

I think present Ben is adrift right now, thats why he seems more scared and unsure (waking up to the guy he just killed, not knowing what hes gonna do) because its at a point where Ben no longer really knows whats gonna happen? I think up till now, Ben has had a pretty good idea how things were supposed to go...with him coming back to the island to be judged by smokey, losing his leadership role to Locke, feeling like he "broke the rules" (whatever that means)...Ben is on an unknown path now. And of course hes gonna be a bit more scared than normal.

The whole struggle will be how much these people can change what happened, and is supposed to be, and what can go wrong if one keeps trying to do so.

I agree, it would have made just as much sense to have Ben remember everything...and just pretend not to for his own reasons. Totally fits in his character. Which makes me believe the writers have an interesting reason for doing it this way. There is a reason going into the temple does what it does..and we'll eventually find out why. Even though young Ben loses his knowledge of these losties at that point, he still very well could have researched the history during his years on the island and eventually found out their importance by the time they crashed on the island in 2004. No way Sayid misses an easy kill. Or doesn't make sure. Well, they made a point to show Sayid being incredibly conflicted after shooting young Ben...grimacing, lower his head, dispair, running away...so you could make the argument that he was too disgusted with himself to stick around and make sure the job was finished. That episode jumped from their first night in Dharmaville to three years later. I think it's safe to assume there's going to be some explanations coming up as to how they ended up becoming part of the DI, esp. Sawyer becoming head of security.

Thats what makes it more interesting than most time travel stories! Two people can occupy the same space with different versions of themselves. Remember, we saw Locke flash back 3 months or so, to the time he was kneeling at the hatch window wailing to the island and the flash of light turning on....we saw present Locke realizing his previous self was over there, and choosing not to go there. But the fact is, they were both there, maybe 200 yards from each other at different versions of themself. So these 1977 losties could very well remain on the island for 25 years, getting older, and eventually being on the island when thier younger selves crash on it in 2004. It could happen. But i personally think these guys are gonna jump in time again eventually before that does. The reason i say there is no "real" paradox problems in "Lost", is cause there is a mechanism in place (explained by Miles and Faraday and Eloise) to prevent people from changing things that had happened, or changing things that will happen in the future. Its a self contained system. So there can be no paradox of Locke being 200 yards from himself with two different versions of himself...because fate/destiny will make sure Locke never meets his younger self, cause it never happened in the first place. If Locke had got it into his head to suddenly go talk to his 3 month younger self (which we know never happened cause Locke never met his older self!), fate/destiny would have done something to stop it from happening. Like, taking away Locke's ability to walk. Weve seen the island do it before. Thats not to say a person cant go back in time on Lost and talk to his/her younger self...we just know Locke cant, cause he had no memory of meeting his older self, which means it never happened. Nothing can happen that wasnt supposed to happen...thats the conceit of the shows use of time travel (as well as visions of the future, and what is supposed to happen, ala Desmond)
