His story is obviously deeply rooted in this story's overall mythology. From the clues dropped so far I'd say it's pretty obvious that he's the philanthropist in Ann Arbor providing most of the Dharma Initiative's phunding. But while that much is mostly clear, there's still a lot of questions to be answered - we know Phil's not the kind of guy to just let Ben die, so my personal guess would be that he changes his stance and performs surgery on the lil' guy in the phinal scene.
