All Arwen does after she rescues Frodo is cry about how much she loves Aragorn and get sick and drop a book. Lame. Arwen </3
Sam is awesome. Gladiator is awesome, too. I just finished watching ROTK yesterday and it took FOREVER to end. I mean, it was the best movie out of all of them, but the ending was about 20 minutes longer than it could've been. It just reminded me of how pathetic Frodo is. |

#3: Gandalf
Some people can blow smoke rings. But let's see them blow smoke pirate ships! Gandalf is awesome. I don't think I even need to write a big long winded paragraph as to why he is. He started out kind of weak as Gandalf the Grey, and got his ass kicked by Saruman. But after defeating the Balrog, he "leveled up" in the second movie and became Gandalf the White. Overall, Gandalf was kind of like the glue that held everything together.... the hobbits journey to Mordor, and the humans' battle with Sauron's army. He was untouchable in battle, and you almost got the idea he could have conquered Sauron's forces all by himself. Factor in his knowledge of everything that was going on, along with his strong moral compass to do the right thing, and you have one of the best and most well rounded characters in the whole series. "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!" <3 |

The LOTR series was so sexist. =O Yeah, I had to force myself to read the Hobbit. The first chapter was hilarious with all the dwarfs bugging Bilbo, but then no female characters just a bunch of male characters walking around through the rest of the book. So I haven't read LOTR. Watching the movies all I could think of is um... that is not Middle Earth... it's just home. (New Zealand) When my older son was 4 he saw his Dad watching LOTR and for awhile after that whenever someone asked him to do something he didn't want to do he put on this perfect Gollum imitation and said "Go away and NEVER come back!"

Tolkien's writing always were very male-centric (he could' ve been an editor for Survivor!), but he had an unhappy marriage, so maybe it was
therapeutic for him to create a world where women were practically invisible.
Anyways, Gandalf if probably my favorite of the good guys. He can really kick some ass for an old dude, heh. |

As someone who has read the books and is a fan of the movies, they both have their strengths and weaknesses. Stephen King wrote an essay in this week's Entertainment Weekly though where he said if you put Sauron and Darth Vader in a battle against each other, though (of course this is based on the book's details of how evil Sauron is), Darth would be p*whipped in about 30 seconds. You should read the books, and then if you're brave enough take on the Silmarillion, where you get to meet Sauron's boss, Morgoth. He makes Sauron look like a pansy. btw, you haven't lived (or seen either LOTR or South Park) until you see this mashup someone did: |

#2: Aragorn
There is not really any denying the awesomeness that is Aragorn. There are a lot of main characters, but I always found Aragorn to be the main focus of the three movies. There is a lot to love about him. He is a great guy who is very kind and caring when he is with his friends. However, in battle he turns it up to a whole new level of fierceness. He whups ass and is pretty much impossible to beat in battle. He has a strong sense for justice and unwaveringly does what he believes to be the right thing. He is a natural leader and has the power to rally people around him. One of the most interesting parts of his legacy is his love story with Arwen. How she gives up immortality just to be with him and bear his child. Must be a heck of a guy. In addition to being a great leader and a great fighter and all that, he is also the rightful heir to the throne of Gondor. In Return of the King, he frees the souls of those cave dwelling ghosts and leads the army of the dead into battle against the forces of Mordor. They are instrumental in turning the tide of the fight. Aragorn fiercely defends his people and is even willing to die at the end of the movie just to draw the forces of Mordor away from Frodo and the Ring. However, everything ends perfectly for Aragorn as he marries Arwen and takes his rightful place as King. Now that the list is almost over, you may think you know for sure who is at #1. Don't be so certain... |

Aragorn is the man. There are like 5 women in all of Middle Earth, and at least 2 of them want him. It would be interesting to see who would win in a fight,
he or Gandalf. Gandalf may be old, but he's got all those wizard-like superpowers (and he defeated the Balrog). Speaking of which, I am disappointed the
Balrog didn't make this list, but otherwise this has been a good ranking.

#1: Gollum
OK, did you really expect anyone else? Gollum is awesome. Although Sauron is the evil behind everything that is going on, Gollum is the true villain of the series. Despite being rarely shown in the first movie, Gollum (or Smeagol if you will) becomes a central force in the next two. Craving the Ring, Gollum jumps Frodo and Sam on their way to Mordor. Upon realizing that he isn't strong enough to overtake them and take the Ring, he decided to lead them into a trap along the way to Mordor. He also tries to discredit Sam. When this fails, and Frodo escapes the giant spider with Sam's help... Gollum is left supposedly for dead. However, he has one last surprising moment in him as he attacks an invisible Frodo and bites his finger off. Gollum gets what he wants as far as the Ring, yet he is thrown into the fire of Mt Doom and dies along with it. Overall, I found Gollum to be quite colorful, and I liked his flashback at the beginning of Return of the King. He is constantly in struggle with both himself (Smeagol) and the power of the Ring. His dialogue is among some of the best in the series, and although he makes you uncomfortable, there is just something intriguing about the little guy. His voice is fun to impersonate. OK that's all. List over. |
