Apparently you don't pay attention to the dwindling music industry, too. People aren't buying cds/singles in the same way that they did back then.

Kind of a stupid question to ask I suppose, but I still give a bit of credit to Idol for helping her career. I know this is not a popular opinion and I'll probably be attacked and mauled and find my family dead in a dumpster somewhere for saying this but Fantasia has been pretty successful. A double platinum debutand a gold sophomore album with 9 top 40 R&B hits, and a couple of mildly successful hot 100 hits. Fantasia hasn't done as poorly as you would think. I guess the key word here is mainstream. If we're talking about mainstream then you have Kelly and Carrie. Waiting to see if they do well with followup albums add David C., Jordin, and Daughtry. Take away the word mainstream put in Kellie Pickler, Jennifer Hudson, Clay Aiken, and yes Fantasia. For Idol to have launched ten successful acts is pretty decent imo. **ETA** Do I think that this season will have anyone successful, I don't know. There is usually one or two per season who does well. I personally don't see any of them doing well, but I never thought in a million years Jordin would be successful so you can't really write anyone off. I mean I like Jordin but I totally thought she would flop.

In all fairness, Jordin probably would have been a flop if she hadn't been dragged onto the charts clutching the coattails of womanbeater Brown.

Jordin and David are well-known in a backwater third-world country like the Philippines. That's mainstream success right there.

The problem is that they're not marketing the idols like they should when they come out. If you wern't paying attention you wouldn't even know
when their albums came out. It's the same with the second place contestants. They're not being marketed to the audience that they should, and many of
the radio stations don't want to play the music (country stations seem to be the exception).
I also think they wait way to long before releasing their albums. They should put the tour off by a couple months so they can get the idols into the studio, then they could do songs from their album during the tour as well as songs from the show. |

Carrie is definitely mainstream. I hear BHC and JTTW all the time on mainstream pop. Hell, I turned the radio station on yesterday and I Told You So was being played. |

Megan is the most marketable out of this season? What kind of planet are some of you from?
I think Megan, Adam, Danny, Scott, or Michael would be marketing disasters. What the hell would you do with them?! |

The ONLY Idol who has been a flop is Taylor Hicks. Every one of them have either met or exceeded expectations.
And they don't even care about him because that season gave the very same record label a man by the name of Chris Daughtry. The Idol machine is just as strong as ever. Why is appears to be faltering is because there are now dozens of people out there who were former Idol contestants who are making albums. And most of them (i.e. the losers) are not selling records. Possibly because they don't have a push of a major record label; but most likely because they weren't that good to begin with. |

Allison and Alexis are wildcards to me because I don't see where either one would fit in the music industry, but I don't think they would totally flop
either.
Maybe market Allison as P!nk's little sister, and Alexis and Baby Aretha. |

Allison is Pink lite. She's not nearly as talented vocally and I'm not really a Pink fan. She has a bit of Clarkson's edge but its Clarkson ultra lite. She's got the stage moves/presence down but other than that.... She's good but it's nothing I think would be an Idol big seller if she were to win. Matt G is their best chance, when he did the wildcard, I was like fuck, there's the winner now. Even if he doesn't get the title, he'll be
picked up by Jive/BMG and be given a record contract and they'll take care of his R&B flavoured music well. He fits into the J.T., Neyo area which is
a mega sell. I'm suprised Cowshit hasn't realized this but then again he's a brooding Brit who doesn't know much about country or R&B. I
could see Matt going Platinum with a decent record of R&B radio hits.

She was already a professional singer (Disney Cruise Line), so I think she would have been interested in pursuing this "holy grail" of roles for a heavy black woman. And there was a huge search and outreach for this role. They contacted literally EVERY black church in the country, for example. If one person who knew her heard about the opportunity and mentioned it to her (and why wouldn't they), I think she would have tried out... |

She's an R&B singer. Secondly, I think a huge part of Jordin's appeal is with the "tween" crowd, and I can't see them going for Lil, who looks and acts more like their mom than their peer... |

Drew B wrote: I wasn't comparing their markets or their musical inclinations more my perception of Lil having the amount of success that Jordin had (reaching 1 million in albums sales after a year of steady but slow album sales, 2 friendly radio hits, and a possible hit given the right producers). Lil marketed well could do very well but depends which angle they push for her. R&B market is tough for women so they'd have to be specific with image, music, etc.. Being a pop tart like Jordin is a lot easier to market and sell to that crowd. Matt G will have a much easier time to break into the scene than Lil being a guy and having the image that is "in" now. |

Yea, no way would Lil even think of going the same direction as Jordin, that would be stupid. She's definitely more mature R&B like I said, Mary J.,
J.Hud, Robin Thicke, Jill Scott, Angie Stone etc. etc. That's where she would thrive.
